Where to find London’s Sweets & Treats

#biscuiteers #nottinghill #londonengland

Have you been to London? If you have, then you’ll know that in London there is simply no such thing as having been there done that. For every item you cross off your “London List” two more will be added. Neighborhoods, museums, parks, restaurants, and… Treats.

#biscuiteers #nottinghill #londonengland #afternoontea
Afternoon Tea at Biscuiteers Notting Hill

We spent three days roaming the City’s neighborhoods in search of treats both sweet and savory. We found this was a perfect way to tour the city enjoying a comfortable feeling of familiarity when we walked by old favorites and a feeling of excitement when we discovered new ones.

#einesigns #shoreditchlondon #londonstreetart #love
Eine Signs LOVE

We did a big loop which took us past many of the city’s most famous spots including: St. Paul’s, the Millennium Bridge, The Globe Theater, The Tate Modern, The London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, and so many more. Stopping periodically for a treat was a great incentive and the 8 miles we walked helped to assuage any guilt we may have felt eating all those treats.

Southbank London

Here, for your convenience, is a list of sweet spots including all the new locations and old favorites, which have been grouped by neighborhood:

Belgravia

Peggy Porschen

Touted by multiple sources as having the “best cupcakes in the world” we decided a visit to Peggy Porschen Cakes, would make our list. We sampled cupcakes and cocoa, and both were delicious. The pretty pink building with its candy colored decor and beautifully decorated deserts has made it a very popular Instagram photo location.

Brick Lane

Dark Sugars Cocoa House

Hot chocolate is a travel tradition in our family, and no trip would be complete without it. My younger son and I made sure that a visit to Dark Sugars Cocoa House, on Brick Lane, was the number one stop on our recent sweets and treats tour of London. The tricky part was getting a photo of all that delicious chocolate before it melted… Also on offer, bowls of decadent and beautiful chocolates and creamy gelato in bright candy colors.

ChinaTown

Taiyaki – Various Places

Stopping in Chinatown for Taiyaki, fish shaped cream filled buns, is another London tradition, and this visit was no exception. The texture falls somewhere between a waffle cone and a pancake, and they are traditionally filled with red bean paste, but custard and Nutella are other popular options. Larger taiyaki are filled with soft serve in traditional asian flavors like ube and black sesame.

Citywide

Warm Caramelized Peanuts

You’ll find cart vendors selling warm caramelized nuts all over the city. We’ve often stopped at the one at the foot of the Millennium  Bridge just outside the Tate Modern. Sticky sweet and warm makes for a nice combination on a cool evening by the river.

Mayfair

Sketch

This delightful Pink Panther Mousse was the perfect end to our Sketch experience. Sketch, located in London’s posh Mayfair neighborhood, is one of The City’s trendiest dining spots, but it’s not just a pretty face with Insta worthy decor (though it has plenty of that in spades), the food is also beautiful and more importantly delicious. Each of the multiple dining areas, all with different themes, has its own menu and price point making this fun and quirky spot accessible to everyone.

Notting Hill

Biscuiteers

Not that I ever need an excuse to sample delicious sweets and treats, but as I’ve recently opened my own cookie company, @cookiesareeverything, (yes, a shameless plug), we made sure to include cookies, or as they say across the pond biscuits, to our list of must try treats. We discovered @biscuiteersltd and were delighted to find that they don’t only sell their beautiful creations, but offer an afternoon (sweets only) tea as well as private icing lessons and parties. Yes please!

#nottinghill #biscuiteers #icedbiscuits #londonengland

Bubbleology

We’re big fans of bubble tea (boba) and apparently so are Londoners as there were long lines at every bubble tea spot. Bubbleology in Notting Hill was a perfect place to stop and take a break. I chose the more traditional Milk Tea with boba, but they offer many unique flavor combinations including, grape, lychee, and even Nutella boba, which was my son’s choice.

Piccadilly

Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum and Mason has been a London institution for over 300 years, so when I told friends I’d never been they were shocked! How could I have missed such a special place? I knew I had to remedy this situation on my very next visit and so I did.

To say we were not disappointed is an understatement. Pastry cases filled with the most decadent treats, dark wood shelves lined with the prettiest biscuit tins you ever saw, tea, coffee, jams, picnic hampers, iced biscuits, and chocolates, and that was just the food hall. The interiors are as decadent as the offerings and we spent ages admiring everything and doing our best not to put everything we saw into our basket. Fortnum and Mason is now on our permanent London List.

Shoreditch

Rebel’s Alliance Motorcycle Club

Raise your hand if you’re a coffee lover! If so, you’ll want to stop in at the Rebel’s Alliance Motorcycle Shop on Sclater Street in London’s Shoreditch Neighborhood. Enjoy a cup of coffee surrounded by vintage motorcycles, art and vintage style clothing.

Eine Signs

Although our recent whirlwind day out in London was mainly about where to find the sweets, that didn’t mean we couldn’t make time for some treats too. In my book that means street art, and we were delighted to visit @einesigns most recent addition to the Shoreditch neighborhood.

SoHo

Maitre Choux

It’s good to have a delicious destination at the end of a long walk, or if you’re like us stop at 5 along the way! @maitrechoux has multiple locations, but their SoHo shop was on our route and turned out to be one of my favorite stops as not only were the eclairs beautiful, but they were delicious as well.

London’s oldest food market has been serving the people of Southwark for over 1000 years. You’ll find stalls, shops, cart vendors and restaurants selling everything from the freshest produce, fish and artisan breads to Indian food, meat pasties, dumplings and so much more. The Borough Market has something for everyone.

Secret Walls

We recently attended Secret Walls, the Fight Club of the art scene, which took place at the Start Los Angeles Gallery. 29 artists armed with nothing more than a marker, a brush and some black paint had 45 minutes to complete their drawings. No pencils and no sketches allowed! 10 artists moved on to the next round… This fun event will be taking place every month until the last artist is standing.

The Sparrow Mart

We loved the Sparrow Mart, I could have done my entire grocery shop there, a temporary pop up shop in the Downtown LA Standard Hotel. The only problem? Everything was made of felt! Yes, that’s right, ALL 31,000 handmade and painted grocery items from gefilte fish to bubble gum and pork chops were pretend! It’s the ultimate “playing store” experience!

Where to find Street Art in New Orleans

#bywaterneworleans

You might be surprised to learn that during my many visits to New Orleans, I’ve spent very little time in the pursuit of street art. That’s partly because there isn’t any street art in the French Quarter, nor should there be, and what little there is in other neighborhoods had, until very recently, eluded me.

#onetimeinneworleans

The street art/mural movement has started to catch on and I was thrilled to discover, stumble upon, some pretty nice pieces while walking town. I know there is more, and that I’ve missed a number of wonderful pieces, but time was limited and I look forward to seeking them out the next time I’m in town. Photo Tour: Scenes of Little Havana

Calle Ocho Little Havana Florida #Allmightychillsky

Named for Cuba’s capital and largest city, and famous for it’s large concentration of Cuban exiles, Little Havana should be on any Miami Must List.  Even with limited time to explore I managed to get a feel for this vibrant cultural area, and came away wishing for more.

Exploring the Wynwood Art District

WynHOOD Wall Wynwood Miami Florida #wynwoodwalls #sethglobepaintner

Its safe to say, with the exception of family and friends, art is the greatest passion in my life. Fine or street, museum or gallery, indoor, outdoor, I love it all, which is why a visit to the Wynwood Art District in Miami, Florida was long overdue.

Hello Beautiful Wynwood Walls Miami Florida-
Artist: Queen Andrea

The Wynwood Art District, is not only home to the Wynwood Walls, the famous outdoor street art museum, but the entire area is a colorful riot of murals, galleries, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and hip restaurants.

Wynwood Art District Miami Florida
Wynwood Art District

Beyond officially commissioned or organized works, every available surface is covered in art, the sidewalks, entire buildings, signage…  Everything! The neighborhood is a celebration of all things art, and is positively buzzing with a vibe that you can literally see and feel.

Prior to my arrival, I had an idea of what to expect, but was still surprised by all there was to see and experience in this multicolored wonderland, and because my visit took place during Miami Art Week everything was amplified. I spent 8 hours exploring, and still didn’t see it all, but if you’ve never been before here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Wynwood Walls
Location: 2520 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami

What are the Wynwood Walls?

Wynwood Walls is a free “museum of the streets” an outdoor art museum where all the works are created and displayed directly on the walls.

A Brief History

Wynwood Walls was created in 2009, by developer Tony Goldman, in an attempt to revitalize and transform the warehouse district of Wynwood. Mr. Goldman saw artistic potential in the area’s warehouse buildings, many of which were windowless. He beautified them with giant murals and opened a restaurant and bar in the hopes that it would bring foot traffic to the neighborhood. 10 years later Wynwood has been called the hippest neighborhood in America, with millions of people visiting every year. I’d say his idea was a smashing success!

Also including Wynwood Doors, the Wynwood Garden and Outside The Walls, Wynwood Walls includes works from over 50 artists from around the world. Every year, during Art Week/Art Basel, artists are invited to contribute based on the year’s theme. 2018’s theme was: Beyond Words

Tours aren’t required for a visit to Wynwood, but if you do take one you’ll learn in-depth information about the artists and their process as well as the history of the Wynwood Art District. Choose the Official Early Access Tour and you’ll enter more than an hour before the crowds. This is important if you’re interested in people free photos of the murals.

1-800-Lucky
Location: 143 NW 23rd Street, Miami

If 1-800-Lucky was located in Los Angeles it would absolutely be my favorite restaurant. In fact, if I could eat there whenever I wanted I would be hard pressed to ever cook again. The food was pure deliciousness!

1-800-Lucky Wynwood Miami Florida
1-800-Lucky Wynwood Miami Florida

I could try to describe it myself, but I doubt I could do better than Conde Nast Traveler:

A 10,000-square-foot food hall in the style of a hip, Asian market with indoor and outdoor seating and a booming soundtrack of hip hop. Seven vendors hawking pan-Asian dishes from ramen to Vietnamese sandwiches encircle an open dining room that is also flanked by two full bars and a karaoke lounge.

If a hip vibe and delicious food aren’t enough to convince you, I asked three people on the street where to eat and they unanimously said: 1-800-Lucky. Oh, and did I mention that its also a record shop?

You can’t bring home the murals, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities to bring home other art treasures. The retail shops and galleries are selling everything from moss statues and paintings to street art inspired clothing and even holiday baubles.

Travel will always be a priority in my life, but realistically I can’t always be on the road, so creating adventures closer to home has started to play a bigger roll. That doesn’t mean I don’t have some pretty lofty travel goals. Currently Croatia, Italy and Japan are topping my international wish list, while New York, Nashville and Charleston are at the top of my North American list.

In April we joined friends for 4 fabulous days in and around Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This was my first trip to Mexico, and we filled our days with boating, snorkeling, ocean swimming, and a trip to town. In between all that exploring we even found time to relax.

Our final trip of the year was our annual visit to New Orleans. I was nervous we might not make it for the tricentennial in 2018, but we managed to fit in a quick visit. Our three days there were filled to the brim with both old and new favorites. Beignets anyone?

Exploring Brick Lane London

Brick Lane London England United Kingdom

A trip to Brick Lane, located in London’s East End, is always on our London to do list no matter the length of our visit. The area has been through many transformations over the years, and even within the decade plus that we’ve been visiting. Its hard to believe that this now trendy neighborhood was once a poor slum and the scene of the notorious Jack the Ripper’s infamous crimes.

Brick Lane London England United Kingdom #bricklanelondon
Brick Lane London
Brick Lane Curry London England United Kingdom #bricklane
Brick Lane

The area is famously known for the large concentration of Bangladeshi restaurants, but  the most recent metamorphosis of the district includes fantastic street art, hip markets, galleries filled with emerging artists and trendy clubs.

The Brick Lane Cultural Trail

In fact Brick Lane isn’t just one street anymore, but rather a collection of streets known as the Brick Lane Cultural trail. The area has a great vibe making it a great place for a photo tour, bite to eat, or just to wander. Handy signs have been installed throughout the area, which will both guide and educate visitors about the area’s rich history and culture.

SAMSUNG CSC

It’s almost impossible to ignore the pull from the barker’s who stand outside the many curry houses lining the streets, and at some point you’re going to give in to one of them. If you’re stronger than me, and are able to withstand the pressure, consider grabbing a bite at one the area’s pop up markets instead. Either way, once you’ve filled up its time to start exploring. My main interest in the area is public and urban art, but you’ll find shops and galleries worth poking in and out of as well.

Street Art & Graffiti

The area is covered in art and you’ll find pieces by well known artists as well as many who are just getting started. People come from around the world to make their mark. Some are commissioned, and others clearly not, some are political in nature, and others just lovely, while others are strange, or even at times frightening.

Brick Lane Curry London England United Kingdom #bricklane
Brick Lane London

Due to the nature of street art and graffiti the walls of this colorful neighborhood are constantly changing, but I still had hopes of finding a specific piece by London artist Fanakapan. I’m a big of fan of his shiny photorealistic style, and his work is often found in this area. I didn’t find the piece, but I found something even better: Fanakapan himself! As soon as I saw a man painting, and the shiny work in progress, I knew it was him.

Fanakapan Brick Lane London England United Kingdom

He graciously took the time to speak with me and we took a photo together, but like many street artists Fanakapan prefers not to show his full face online. He gave me permission to post this one with his face partially covered.

Fanakapan Brick Lane London England United Kingdom

The piece he was working on was clearly political. It shows a fox (Trump) holding a dead duck in its mouth with more ducks (Americans) blindly following behind. Because we made multiple visits to the neighborhood we were able to watch the progression of this piece.

Paste-ups , Stencils, Graffiti and Murals

With so much art covering everything top to bottom I wasn’t always able to determine who the artists were, and it was next to impossible to remember exactly where I was when I spotted it. The gallery below is just a sample of what I saw. Whenever possible I’ve included artist information in the captions.

I love the whimsical, yet at times very political nature of Osch’s work and if you look carefully you’ll spot the clever work of Clet on the area’s street signs. Keep your eye out for Jaune’s mini dudes because they’re keeping an eye out for you.

Downtown LA Arts District Graffiti & BBQ Tour

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California

Always on the lookout for new LA adventures I was excited to discover a new Arts District walking tour, featuring Graffiti and BBQ, which happen to be two of my family’s favorite things. It was almost as if this tour was tailor made for our art loving barbecue eating family. The three hour tour includes an insider’s look at graffiti writing in the Downtown Los Angles Arts District, a graffiti lettering workshop, and a late lunch at Pearl’s BBQ.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #pearlstexasbbq
Pearl’s Texas BBQ

The tour starts and ends at Pearl’s, Texas BBQ.

Once everyone arrived we set off on a two hour neighborhood walk. Whether you think of it as art or not a large percentage of graffiti is done illegally and therefore will be found in and around alleys, parking lots and vacant buildings. Places where the writer won’t easily be seen.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #yarnbomb
Artist: unknown

Two hours flew by and it was time for lunch and our graffiti writing workshop. We spent time discussing our street names, as many graffiti writers go by aliases, and then we were each given our very own “piece book” in which to practice our street writing skills.

This is the part where I admit that I was completely forgot to take any photos of the BBQ. I know, I know, how could I? Photo or no, The brisket sandwich, Texas toast and pickle were all delicious.

Three LA locals lead the tour each sharing their expertise about graffiti writing, culture and neighborhood history.

Steve Grody has been documenting graffiti for 28 years and gave us insights into the different eras, styles, and terms associated with graffiti writing. Steve feels that graffiti writers helped introduce public art to the masses.

The difference between street artists and graffiti writers is a common question on tours like this and it was no surprise that the subject came up. Steve’s opinion is that while there is now some crossover between the two groups there is also resentment. Many graffiti writers feel that street artists take fewer risks and work in safer environments.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #traver

On the is it Art question? One way to look at it is: Writing outside on the street is graffiti and this type of art inside a gallery is art in the style of graffiti.

This Risk Revok Able piece has been up for 15 years which is an amazing achievement in the graffiti world. It demonstrates the high level of respect the community feels for these particular artists. If you look at the above photo of Steve outside Retna’s studio you can see that his style has changed dramatically over the years.

As we walked along we learned about the history of graffiti, which goes back hundreds if not thousands of years with the root of the movement in writing. While typing this I think back to the graffiti writing I saw on the cell walls inside the Tower of London, which is hundreds of years old.

Cindy started Cartwheel Art in 2012 and is a long time resident of the Arts District. She has a deep knowledge of the neighborhood and the people within. Her passion for the area is both immediately evident and contagious. Thanks to Cindy I’ve discovered a number of wonderful LA events.

One such event was Art at the Rendon, which was an immersive art experience inside a vacant hotel in the heart of the Arts District. 60 different artists showcased their work within the hotel and every room was completely transformed. The experience allowed the viewer to be completely immersed within the individual works of art and within the hotel as a whole.

Graffiti Vocabulary

Graffiti writers have a language of their own and like any foreign language a basic knowledge will go a long way in helping you understand what you’re seeing or reading.

Angels –  Famous or respected graffiti artists who have died. Sometimes represented by tags or tributes with halos above them.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #serch
Memorial to Serch

Crew –  A group of artists who regularly collaborate often in the same part of town. Examples of local crews: UTI, Ghetto Art Warriors (GSW), Dead Silent Killers (DSK), The Love Crew and Mad Society Kings (MSK).

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #lovecrew
Artist: Love Crew

Legal Walls – Walls, buildings or neighborhoods where artists are encouraged to create graffiti. The ability to create without having to look out for the police means larger and more creative pieces.

Mural – A huge work, often on a legal wall. It might be done by an individual, an informal group, or a crew

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California
Artist: Unknown

Piece or Masterpiece – Short for “masterpiece.” The term is frequently used to describe a more labor-intensive work.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #skilo
Artist: Skilo

Throw up, Throwie or Quickie – A tag or small “piece” thrown up in a hurry, often located down low.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #cartwheelart
Artist: Dr. Did

Simple – a bit more than a throwie but not quite a piece.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California
Steve Grody Carwheel Art Tour Guide

Piece Book – A piece book is the black book that graffiti artists use to plan out and practice their pieces (masterpieces) before hitting the wall. Often fellow writers will sign each other’s books and or even pass them on, thereby creating a diary or history of their work.

Guest Book – when the sidewalk next to a respected piece has been signed by other writers. This guest book is next to a UTI piece.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #guestbook
Graffiti Writers Guest Book

Tag – A stylized name or signature done with various materials, such as a marker or an aerosol spray can, often freehand.

Slap Tag – Slap tagging is a form of graffiti or street art where the image is created on a sticker and then literally slapped on to a surface.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #stickerbombing
Sticker Bombs

One Liner –  Writing your name in one line without ever lifting the can.

Arts District Downtown Los Angeles California #herl
Artist: Herl from Australia

Toy(s) – A derogatory term referring to either poor workmanship, or an inexperienced writer. Going over or “toying” someone else’s work is an act of disrespect. An acronym meaning Tag Over Your Shit.

Take Another Look

Next time you’re out and about take another look at that graffiti and try to decipher what you’re seeing. Is it a throwie, a tag, or a masterpiece? Are you inspired to “speak” graffiti?  If so, what’s your street name?

Graffiti Lisbon Portugal Escadinhas De Sao Cristovao

Recently I had the chance to meet up with Urban Canvas, a new social media and street art finder app based out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. We spent an afternoon in the Downtown LA Arts District filming and talking about street art, why I love it so much, and the positive impact it has in Los Angeles, and other cities around the world. Wondering where you can find all this amazing art? We talk about that too!

The app, currently available in Spanish (English, French and Portuguese coming soon), allows users to upload photos and location information about street art in real-time. Users around the world can use this tool to browse by location, user or specific artist. Basically, street art just got its own social media! This is great news for all my fellow street art hunters out there!

You can watch the video clip of my interview below, or if you prefer I’ve included a transcript along with some street art and graffiti pieces from my travels.

How did you get interested in street art?

It was my visit to Lisbon three years ago that really awakened my love of this art genre I was blown away by not only the large amount of art covering just about every imaginable surface, but by the level of obvious talent displayed. Since then I’ve been hard at work curating my “collection”, and was even inspired to do a bit of amateur painting myself!

Why is Street art important for communities?

Street art is important in communities for so many reasons.

There’s something so wonderful about a giant piece of art out there in the open for everyone to enjoy. You might just see it out of the corner of your eye as you walk, bike or drive by, but if you do have the time or inclination, it’s there for you to admire at your leisure any time of day or night. Stay as long as you’d like, or take a photo, interact with it. It’s there for your enjoyment, no walls, opening hours, admission, or strings attached.

In recent years street art festivals have helped to raise awareness and money for various causes and at the same time bring communities together. The appearance of a fresh mural can brighten up an area and at the same time help to eradicate urban blight.

A great example of this is the Mural Trail in Glasgow, Scotland. The Trail, a series of paintings in just about every style imaginable, was created to reduce the negative impact of an economic downtrun and to help bring new life and visitors to the city center. You’ll find these amazing works of art on the side and front of buildings both occupied and vacant.

When did Street art began to grow in popularity here in L.A.?

Today there are countless murals throughout the city of LA, but there was a period of 10 years, referred to as the Mural Moratorium, where it was illegal to paint any kind of fine art mural. Anywhere. Even on private property. The penalties included steep fines and even jail time. Many artists chose to move away and even now many graffiti and mural artists are anonymous, preferring instead to use pseudonyms, in order to protect their identities. I believe the mural moratorium ended in 2013.

What are some of the best locations to see Street art in L.A.?

Los Angeles has literally exploded with art, and there are so many great locations in which to see it. Here are just a few:

  • Melrose Avenue stretching from N. Robertson to Highland Avenue with a high concentration around the Fairfax District
  • West 3rd Street and Robertson
  • Downtown Los Angeles Arts District
  • Downtown Los Angeles Historic Core
  • Silver Lake and Echo Park
  • Mission Junction – East of Chinatown

Why do you think Street art used to be criminal and what contributed to it becoming an acceptable art form?

If a piece of “art” isn’t commissioned by a building owner, then it is still illegal. However, that doesn’t mean the owner won’t decide to keep it up, or that it isn’t art. I believe there is a vast difference between a complex painting, even if it isn’t commissioned and someone randomly spray painting a few words (tagging) on the side of a building or over someone else’s work.
Shoreditch Street Art #Jimmy
Jimmy C Whitby Street
Social media and positive interaction between the art and people have contributed greatly to helping street art become an acceptable art form. A new piece of art will draw visitors, who in turn frequent nearby business, who in turn contribute to the gentrification of an area and so on.
Shoreditch Street Art Wings #DiarmuidByronOconnor

Does LA city government (or California) give money to support street artists?

I don’t know if any city funds are allocated towards street art per se, but I do know that individuals can work with the city in order to facilitate or sponsor a piece of art. For example the not for profit organization Beautify Earth works with the city and private building owners to put up murals all over LA and in other cities as well. The City of Santa Monica has an ongoing project dedicated to featuring artists, street and otherwise.

In your opinion what is the difference between graffiti and Street art? Which do you prefer?

I’ve asked many an artist this very question and it differs every time. I think the big difference between street art and graffiti is legality. If something was put up without permission it is graffiti. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t art.

Where to find Street Art in Portland Oregon

Street Art Portland Oregon #yoshi47

The amount of street art going up in cities around the world is simply staggering, so you might think finding it would be easy, but strangely that’s not the case. It’s always a lovely surprise when you come around the corner and are greeted by a larger than life mural, but with limited time in a city wandering aimlessly and hoping to get lucky just won’t do.

Street Art Scavenger Hunt

I think of finding street art as a giant scavenger hunt. I use clues from Google searches and Instagram to try and work out where I can find multiple murals or a specific piece within a city. Still, I can’t tell you how many times we have walked right by a piece, or simply can’t find it at all. I will even admit that I’ve walked within feet of amazing art, and never knew it was there until it was too late.

I found this Faith47 piece just prior to leaving the city, it was around the corner from my hotel.

Once I do find a piece it’s not always easy to work out the artist’s name, but I will always do my best to share with you not only the artist’s name, but the mural’s exact location.

Bad lighting, fencing, trash, dumpsters and parked cars can all get in the way of snapping an unobstructed photo of street art murals.  Still, I was able to “collect” a large amount of art on this trip, and if you can believe it these are just the photos I deemed acceptable for sharing.

Street Art Walking Tour

To help make my Portland street art scavenger hunt successful I reached out to the Portland Street Art Alliance (PSAA) and arranged a walking tour in the Central Eastside Industrial District. Unfortunately it was 95 degrees out the day of our tour, making it difficult to stop and enjoy the art, but we did our best.

During my visit I learned of Forrest For the Trees a nonprofit organization that organizes and facilitates public art in the city of Portland. You’ll find a gallery of murals on their website, however the locations and murals aren’t listed together…

Central Eastside Industrial District
Location: South of I-84 to Powell and the Willamette River to SE 12th.

Though still very much an area of industry the Central Eastside is also dotted with hip eateries, trendy bars, and one-of-a-kind shops. It’s also a hotspot for murals!

Street Art Walking Tour In hindsight a walking tour on a 95 degree day probably wasn't the best idea, but having scheduled it in advance we decided to give it a go anyway. The extreme heat really put a damper on our ability to stop and enjoy the art, but we did our best!
