HilaryStyle’s Top Ten Cities!

#gargoyleNew York, Paris, Tokyo… there are so many amazing cities in the world, and lucky me, along with my family, I’ve had the opportunity to visit quite a few of the greats! Of course, not everyone agrees about which of them deserve to be on the Best List even among family members, which we discovered one evening over dinner during a recent visit to Paris. The boys and I thought it might be fun to take the conversation a step further and make a Top Ten Cities list.

Spoiler Alert!

Paris didn’t make the list and neither did Tokyo!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved visiting both cities and given the chance would go back to both of them repeatedly, in fact I’ve been to Paris on three separate occasions, but others in the family didn’t agree, so they didn’t make the list. I know some reading this list might say, we’ve left off important cities, or personal favorites, but before you do, let me explain that in order to be considered each city had to meet two important criteria:

  1. All four of us had to have been there personally.
  2. The vote had to be unanimous.

Many places I personally consider great didn’t make this list which begs the question, “What makes a city great?” The answer is it’s different for everyone, which is why we had to have the honorable mentions list, and still a few of my faves didn’t make it.

Just nominating a city wasn’t enough. Each of us also talked about what made us love a particular place and or why we didn’t. This was such a fun activity that we carried the conversation/debate on for multiple days after. So without further ado…

Our Top Ten Cities in order are:

  1. New Orleans, Louisiana – Overall character, culture, food & art!#stlouiscathedral
  2. London, England –  All the Royalness, history, museums, Corinthia cocoa, & an overall easy place to be as well as a great jumping off point for getting to other great places!#changingoftheguard
  3. Barcelona, Spain  – Living the Barcelona lifestyle, food, & culture!Barcelona
  4. Los Angeles, California – The vibe, the fashion, the beach…come on, it’s LA!Los Angeles Trip Edits-9142
  5. Edinburgh, Scotland – a beautiful and mysterious place filled with fascinating history, the nicest people, all surrounded by  faded splendor and crumbling beauty!Edinburgh
  6. New York, New York – The big city feel, museums, food, the smells both good and bad!#New York
  7. Kyoto, Japan – Centuries of tradition, food, beauty, a truly magical place!#5000toriigates
  8. Rome, Italy – Ancient history, gelato around every corner, fantastic coffee and quite possibly the most beautiful holiday decorations we’ve ever seen!#christmasinrome
  9. Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands – a beautiful easy city filled with lovely people. A place where people feel free to be themselves!
  10. Lisbon, Portugal – Beauty everywhere you look, a unique character, yummy treats and friendly people make Lisbon a place we’d like to see more of!

Honorable Mentions:

As I mentioned above there were a number of places that one or more of us wanted on the Top Ten List, but sadly didn’t make it, still we felt they deserved a mention, so here they are:

Seattle, Washington – After all, there’s no place like home! Not to mention, quirky tourist attractions, close proximity to natural wonders and fun museums! If only Tim enjoyed rainy days…

#emp

Half Moon Bay, California – Tim’s happy place, great fish and chips, almost guaranteed wildlife sightings and high surf are just a few of the things that draw us to Half Moon Bay on a regular basis. If only there was a little more going on in this lovely little town, though it’s a great place to get pumpkins!

Half Moon Bay

Tokyo, Japan – The world’s largest city, an amazing place with many contrasts and unique cultural differences that deserves a lot more exploration. By far Simon’s favorite city!

#mtfuji

Disneyland – Okay, not technically a city, it’s definitely high on my personal list and it is the Happiest Place on Earth, so I’m making an executive decision and throwing it on!

#disneyland60thanniversary

What’s on your list?!

Dublin! A Woman Needs A Man, Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle!

#guinnessstorehouse

#fishonabicycleA woman needs a man, like a fish needs a bicycle, good things come to those who wait, and not everything in black and white makes sense, these are just a few of the things we learned during our recent visit to The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland. Though I’m not usually a beer drinker, okay, I never drink it. Ever. I absolutely loved our visit to the Guinness Storehouse as did my kids, and if you should find yourself in Dublin I highly recommend a visit.

Follow the Signs!

#guinnessstorehouse

Located in the St. James’s Gate Brewery, the Guinness Storehouse is easily found, just follow the signs, and look for the large vats of what they call the Black Stuff. According to Guinness, the Storehouse is Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction with over 4 million visitors each year. In fact, according to Forbes the Guinness Storehouse is one of what they consider to be the 3 best global brand experiences* in the world!

First Things First

Ireland Guinness Storehouse

Per our usual, our day didn’t really get started until lunch time, so we decided to hit the cafeteria on the 5th floor first thing. There are multiple dining options, but we were too hungry to wait for a table in the more formal restaurants, so we opted for the Brewers Dining Hall. We enjoyed our food. Of course there are many Guinness inspired items on the menu, and if you’re interested you can bring home printouts of various Guinness inspired recipes!

Your Tour Starts Here:

Ireland Guinness Storehouse

Your self guided tour starts on the ground floor with an introduction to the four main ingredients, water, yeast, barley, and hops, with the founder Arthur Guinness making up the magical fifth ingredient. Arthur Guinness signed a 9000 year lease when he started the brewery. Apparently, he knew what he was doing because over 250 years later his beer is one of the most popular in the world.

#guinnessstorehouse

Along the way…

Ireland Guinness Storehouse

While exploring the seven floors at the Storehouse you’ll learn not just what Guinness is made from, but it’s history, how it’s processed, shipped, and even how it’s poured. Here’s a fun fact: Guinness’s famous harp logo is a depiction of the Brian Boru harp, which is currently in Trinity College, and was first used by the company in 1862. In 1922 when the Irish Free State chose to use the harp as the symbol of their nation they had to use a mirror image to avoid trademark issues.

#guinnessstorehouse

The tasting rooms on the 2nd floor are incredibly popular so you’ll have to plan in advance if you’re interested.

#guinnessstorehouseFloor three showcases 80 years of advertising campaigns, which we loved and afterwards had fun recognizing in all the pubs around town and every other town we visited in Ireland and just about everywhere else! We also posed with the animals and heard a whistling oyster!

Guinness School?

#guinnessstorehouse

We weren’t able to visit floor 2, but we were able to visit the Guinness Academy on the 4th floor, where you learn the six steps to pouring the perfect Guinness. Yes, thats right, there are six steps and there is a Guinness Academy. I must admit I was somewhat nervous… What if I didn’t do it right? Guess What? With a little bit of practice, I passed!

A few things I learned at the academy:

  • Waiting for your Guinness to settle is crucial to your enjoyment.
  • I like Guinness!

The Gravity Bar

#slainte

The seventh stop on your tour is the Gravity Bar , which is of course located on floor 7 at the very top! The bar offers 360 degree views of Dublin and the brewery down below. Your entry fee allows for one glass of Guinness each and the Gravity Bar is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a pint! In case you’re wondering the boys had soft drinks!

One Last Stop!

#guinnessstorehouseOf course you know we couldn’t leave before a visit to the gift shop! They sell everything you can imagine, Guinness crisps, Guinness chocolate (tastes like Guinness), clothing, holiday ornaments, magnets, and on and on… This holiday season I’ll be enjoying my new Guinness tree bauble!

I must admit I never thought I would say that a visit to a brewery was fun, let alone a highlight or a family activity, but not only was the tour fun and informative, we loved the look and feel of everything from signage to displays and interactive galleries and I highly recommend a visit!

Happy Anniversary Hilarystyle.me!

Today marks the One Year Anniversary of Hilarystyle.me, and I’m pretty excited about this milestone! You might be surprised to read that putting myself “out there” isn’t always easy and pushing the Publish button that first time, was not just a little bit nerve-wracking. Many things were going through my mind: would anyone be interested in this blog, care what I have to say, find my advice on travel, fashion, or fun useful? I pushed it anyway, faced my fears and… Wallah!

Here WE are one year later and apparently, the answer is a big YES! I am definitely proud of myself, but more importantly, I am grateful to all of you for following, reading, and commenting week after week!

Glasgow…Whoops! I did It Again!

Glasgow day one-3336Whoops! Accidentally hit the publish button before I was ready, again… Tomorrow we will be two weeks into our six week whirlwind adventure, which includes six countries, multiple cities and countless experiences! Keeping track of everything over the course of six weeks will be a challenge, so keeping a daily log of everything we are doing, eating and seeing will ensure that I can share it with all of you! Oops! My plan was to work out the correct spelling, punctuation and small details later, but things don’t always go as planned. I’ll chalk it up to spending the day traveling from Belfast to Glasgow and settling into our 5th hotel in just under two weeks time.

Though we haven’t had time to see very much of Glasgow as of yet, what we have seen is pretty great! I’ll look forward to writing all about it later, but until then here are a few photos from this afternoons first glimpse!

Blogging Awards! I’ve Been Nominated…

Sharing my love of the things I enjoy most comes naturally to me as it’s an inherited family trait. Hi Dad! Writing long personally tailored emails to friends about my travels or party ideas was happening more and more and I had been thinking about creating a place to store this information for future use. That’s when I decided to start Hilarystyle.me.

hilarystyle blog header tim

Not really sure what to expect, I set two goals for myself:

The first smaller goal was to compile the information on the blog along with a few photos and links to our favorite places. This way if friends inquired about our travels I could point them in the direction of the blog.

My second larger scale goal was really more of a hope, the idea that maybe my experiences and thoughts would find their way out onto the web and actually be of interest to other people. You know, people who don’t already know me! Maybe no one would hit the “follow button” or care what I had to say, but I’d never know if I didn’t take a chance and besides I would be achieving goal number one.

Guess What?

People were interested! People I didn’t know! I told myself I wouldn’t care if no one took notice, but I won’t lie I’m pretty excited that people did. In fact I’m down right ecstatic! I’ve learned a lot about myself since I started writing hilarystyle.me and I’m pretty proud of what’s it’s become and where it’s going. Not only that, but I’ve “met” a number of other bloggers in the process and have been inspired by so many of them! Apparently, I’ve been of some inspiration to them as well because two different lovely blogging ladies nominated me for blogging awards!

The Sunshine Award

sunshineawards

Cassy, a fashion blogger, nominated me for the Sunshine award, which is given to fellow bloggers who inspire and bring sunshine into the lives of their readers and fellow bloggers. Thank you Cassy for thinking of me, it’s such an honor to know that not only do you enjoy reading my blog, but that you think it’s cheerful and inspiring!Check out Cassy’s blog, baublesandknots.com for fun inspirational ideas about what to wear for just about any occasion! She’s always including fun jewelry and isn’t afraid to put herself out there! I LOVE THAT!There are some “rules” that come along with the honor of being nominated and I am posting them here:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Answer the questions from your nominator.
  • Nominate other bloggers that bring sunshine to your day.
  • Ask your nominees as many thoughtful questions as you so desire.
  • If you so desire click on a few of the blots see what they’re all about.

Cassy’s questions to me:

  • Is there a favorite book/movie/band/artist that influences your personal style?

I am not one to limit myself and have a wide variety of tastes in all of the above. I think this is clearly reflected in my style!

  • Do you think it is important to unplug & how do you balance this while participating in a digital world?

I do my best to unplug, but must admit I’m not always successful.

  • What does style mean to you?

For me style means fun and for myself personally it’s a reflection of who I am inside as well.

The Liebster Award!

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 12.22.34 AM

Beth, a fellow travel blogger nominated me for the Liebster Award, which is recognition to new bloggers by other bloggers who are enjoying or finding value in their work. Thank you so much for thinking of me! As I mentioned above it means a lot to know that not only are you putting your thoughts and ideas out into the world, but that your words are actually making a positive impact on someone else!

As Beth says: The main aim of the Liebster Award is to highlight new voices and pay the compliment forward to others. Kind of like a virtual chain letter combined with an online high-five.

Check out Beth’s blog VacationCoffee with fun tips about travel, travel with kids and amazing photos!

Beth’s Questions to me:

  • Where do you call home?

Currently, the Bay Area, but I’ve lived all over the country.

  • How would you describe the target audience of your blog in one sentence?

Anyone who loves travel, fashion or fun!

  • What is the primary reason for starting your blog?

To share the fun and adventures I have with my family with others.

  • How often do you post content on your blog?

I post twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 8 am.

  • Is there a story behind your blog name?

Only that I tend to do things in my own way, hence the name Hilarystyle.

  • What is your ideal morning routine?

Lie around drinking coffee, reading blog posts, take the kids to school, work out, coffee with friends…

  • Do you have a vice? If so, what is it?

Drinking white wine with the girls…

  • When you’re not working on your blog, what are you doing instead?

Enjoying my time with family and friends.

  • What is an amazing travel memory you have?

Three years ago, when I stepped out of the train station in Edinburgh, Scotland and my mouth literally fell open with awe at how beautiful it is!

  • Where else on social media can we find you?

  • Who are your favorite people to spend time with?

My three boys!!

And now, I “nominate” . . .

I follow a variety of different blogs about everything from fashion and makeup to lifestyle, travel, and photography! I’m not sure any of them are all that new, but I enjoy them a great deal! I’ll post the addresses to a few of them here and I hope you’ll take a look and find some inspiration the way I have! Happy reading!

Seattle! The Experience Music Project!

#guitarcyclone

#emp

The Experience Music Project (EMP) is an interactive museum dedicated not only to music, as the name suggests, but to all things pop-culture. If you’re me this makes it a place worth visiting. In fact we are frequent visitors and though our group ranges in age from 7 – 70+ there truly is something for everyone, making this an excellent family activity, especially on a rainy Seattle day. New York! #837NYC!

samsung Flagship-0947

We interrupt MY regularly scheduled programming…

My everyday life is a series of routines, and I like it that way, except when I don’t, and it’s usually about that time when I start thinking about getting out of dodge… So earlier this week when I had the chance to break routine and meet Tim in New York, sans kids, I jumped ship almost before I had childcare nailed down… They’re 13 and 7, they can take care of themselves right? Besides, this wasn’t just any couples getaway, Tim was in New York for the grand opening of his latest project, #837NYC, and I was invited to join him for the opening events! Because Tim is the Vice President in charge of this project it played a very large part in our family’s every day life for the past 2+ years. Finally seeing it come to life was such an awesome experience and I am so proud of him!

samsung Flagship-0781

You Might Be Wondering: What is #837NYC?

#837NYC is Samsung’s new flagship space located in the heart of the Meatpacking District in Lower Manhattan and the address is 837 Washington Street. The official twitter feed calls it a place where tech and culture collide and if Monday’s activities are any indication of what the future holds then I absolutely agree! I spent most of the afternoon getting to meet the amazing team of people who helped make this place a reality while trying out many of the building’s interactive exhibits. Here are a few of my favorites:

The Social Galaxy

samsung Flagship-0801

My favorite experience was the Social Galaxy exhibit created by a company called Black Egg. A tunnel lined floor to ceiling with mirrors and Samsung devices of all sizes, the Social Galaxy, immerses you in your own Instagram feed and in essence brings it to life. Your personal images, captions and hashtags are displayed randomly all around you and at the same time a computer voice reads them out loud. It’s a massive display of sights and sounds, all your own, but viewed in a completely new light. As you walk further into the tunnel the display of your personal images becomes enmeshed with other Instagram feeds from around the world. There was something so cool about this experience, and I absolutely loved it!

Keep in mind that although I had the opportunity to walk through the Social Galaxy exhibit on my own, most visitors will be experiencing the space with others, many of whom you may not know. If you are at all worried about sharing your personal photos in the company of others or if you don’t have an Instagram account you can enter any account as long as it’s settings are public. Accounts with a private setting won’t work. We entered a random account and discovered a Dawson’s Creek super fan! Funny!

samsung Flagship-0845

The Selfie Station

Imagine seeing your selfie projected on a screen three stories high! Like most people, I take the occasional selfie, so I thought this interactive selfie experience was pretty fun. Stop at the Selfie Station, take your photo with the already mounted phone, hit approve and like magic there you are much larger than life. The image on the screens is made up of over 60,000 other images. Don’t worry it will stay up for a few moments, so you’ll have time to pose for a photo with your selfie!

Florence + Machine

samsung Flagship-0916

What was already an incredible day ended with a live performance by Florence + Machine! They were the perfect choice to showcase the acoustics of the space! It was an amazing show and I felt so honored to be there celebrating the opening of this lovely space with everyone who had worked so hard to make it a reality.

There are so many other things to explore at #837NYC, but you’ll have to go and visit to see for yourself!

Makeup To Go!

It feels like ages since I’ve been anywhere and I’m starting to get restless… lucky for me I’ve got a few trips coming up and others in the works! As soon as the itineraries appear in my inbox I’m thinking about what to pack! This doesn’t just include the clothing in my suitcase, but makeup and toiletries too!

I try to pack as light as possible, but whether I am going to carry-on or check my bags there are certain items that I like to keep in my carry-on tote, makeup and toiletries are on that list! It’s also a good idea to include a spare pair of underwear and socks too… In the event that your bags and you do get separated you will have fresh undies and your makeup bag, and you’ll be good to go no matter what!

SAMSUNG CSCWhat’s In The Bag?

I always want to feel like myself, and even more so when I’m away from home and other things are unfamiliar, so whenever possible I try to bring the items I use on a daily basis with me when I travel. Of course items over 4 oz are prohibited on the plane, so everything must shrink in size… It’s taken ages, but the makeup industry seems to have finally gotten on board. The MAC counter has a “Sized To Go” section and Nordstrom has a “Mini Must Haves” section with multiple product lines represented!

Not everything comes in convenient travel sizes, but when I can’t find what I am looking for I’ve had great luck asking for sample sizes of my favorite products from the counters I visit regularly. I love my tiny Chanel mascara and primer, and my mini eye cream!

SAMSUNG CSC

Eyeshadows don’t come in travel sizes, but rather than bring many individual shadows, which take up lots of room and have a greater chance of breakage I bring one small palette with many colors. Recently I picked up this fun MAC palette with lots of spring colors. I love the wide variety because I can use it for multiple occasions, both day and night. I’ve even used the pink shades, as blush and cheek highlighter, which you can see are very similar in color to the larger size blush I already own.

Here I am with day and night looks using the same palette:

While I do keep both my makeup and my toiletries in my carry-on tote I like to keep them separate. Keeping all the liquid items in one pouch and non-liquid in the other makes getting through airport security so much smoother!

SAMSUNG CSC

I hope these ideas are helpful! I’d love to hear some of your ideas on what works for you when packing your makeup bag or carry-on. What are your must have items?
