New Year’s Eve! Makeup!

The holiday season is coming to a close and with it 2015, but before we say a fond farewell to this crazy year, we have one more opportunity to celebrate! New Year’s Eve!

I love makeup and I love glitter and for me no holiday look would be complete without them both. Even better why not combine the two! No matter your plans, going to dinner with friends, a fancy party, or just staying in, this look should do the trick!

The Smokey Eye

SAMSUNG CSC

Before getting started I give my face a once over with MAC makeup remover wipes. They are great for picking up any excess dirt or oil that may be on your skin. Next up is moisturizer and I can’t stress this enough, not only is it good for your skin, but it helps give your makeup a smooth more natural appearance. My favorites which I apply in the following order are: Chanel Le Lift eye cream, Dr. Brandt Infinite Moisture, and for daytime events, Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion which is an oil free sunscreen.

To give my skin a more even tone I apply Chanel CC Cream all over and then use a small amount of the Chanel Correcteur Perfection Concealer under my eyes and around the edges of my nose.

Next I apply the powder and blush. I really like MAC Studio Fix and use it everyday. When doing a heavy eye I go a little lighter with blush and for this look I used the Bobby Brown Shimmer Brick in Rose.

Now its time to focus on my eyes. My first step is to apply an eyeshadow paint as a base. My current party favorite is Chanel Fantasme which provides a nice shimmer! I bring the Fantasme all the way to my brow line. Next, my entire lower lid is “painted” with a dark blue Chanel shadow called Swing. To achieve an even darker look and also maintain better control of the shadow I wet the brush before applying. A little water goes a long way.

At this point my lower lid is dark blue and my upper lid is a shimmering white and I’ll need to blend them. To do this I used MAC Gesso Matte which is a white shadow with no shimmer and applied it to the middle area of my lid. I used MAC Pigment Powder in Vanilla to highlight the corner of my eye.

Applying dark shadow can be tricky and it makes perfect sense to do your eyes before completing the steps above. If you do experience a little powder fallout, a q-tip works great to sweep up any excess!

To finish my eyes I applied eyeliner to my upper lid using the Chanel eyeliner pen in Noir. If you’re not sure about using liquid liner this is the one for you! It’s just like drawing with a felt tip marker! For the lower lid and waterline I used a MAC eyeliner pencil in Black Swan which has a tiny bit of shimmer to it. I use a brush to smudge the shadow under my eyes.

Recently I discovered mascara primer and I love not only the length it gives to my lashes, but how easily the mascara goes on after using it. I am using Chanel, but MAC also has one available! The final touch to my eyes is Chanel Inimitable mascara in Noir.

Last but not least, lips! It’s the holiday season, so I felt red was in order, but again because I went with such a dark shadow I didn’t want it to be too over powering, so I toned it down with a gloss. I used MAC Luster in Cockney and a MAC lip gloss from the Cinderella line.

The Finished Look

#partymakeup

Here is my finished look! I hope you like it and whatever your plans I wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

The Christmas Edition: I Made A List…

…but I didn’t have time to check it twice?! It’s the Holiday Season and there is always so much to do… I call it Making Christmas and If you’ve ever seen The Nightmare Before Christmas you’ll recognize this as one of the songs in the movie. Very much like the characters from the movie, the entire time I am “making Christmas”  I am humming this tune.

I haven’t always celebrated Christmas and while at this point I would like to consider myself a pro at making the magic happen, just like Jack Skellington, I was pretty dazzled by Christmas when I first discovered it, and I still am! The giving, the glitter, the twinkling lights (you know I love the twinkling lights), family, friends, baked goods, christmas stockings…

Making Christmas! Making Christmas! La La La La La La La La!#checklist

This year’s holiday card photo was taken in Lisbon, Portugal in the Belem neighborhood. As soon as I saw this heart sculpture I knew this would be our holiday photo!

Like many families we visit Santa at our local mall every year. Over the years we’ve developed a simple strategy to avoid the long lines: 1) We go early in the season 2) We get in line about 10 minutes before Santa comes back from his lunch break! This year, there were only three families in line ahead of us and I got not only this nice photo with Santa, but a pretty nice one without him too! Too bad I didn’t need a holiday card pic! I love to take out all the photos from previous years and lay them all in a row. It’s so fun seeing how much the kids have grown! I’m grateful to Simon for being such a good sport!

Because I already had the photo I was able to order our cards earlier than normal this year… I was even able to include the Santa photos in with the family holiday cards. I was so excited to find this travel design on the Minted website!

We have a lot of ornaments and  I want to find the perfect tree to display them. I’m not great at this, so Tim chooses for me. He’s pretty good at it!  This year we had a tough time finding a tree and I am guessing its because of the drought we are having here in California. We went to a number of places before finding “the one”.

holiday checklist--8

Tim and I have been collecting ornaments from our travels for the past 18 years! One of my favorite Christmas activities is taking them out of their boxes. Don’t laugh, but its like greeting old friends. There are the wedding ornaments my sister gave me when we got engaged, the snowflakes I gave Tim when we were dating, and of course the many ornaments we’ve picked up from around the world! This year we added a number of beautiful memories from our trips to New Orleans, Portugal, Spain, England and Disneyland! I put together a mini tree to showcase all the new ones!

When holidays collide! I grew up celebrating Chanukah, but hadn’t done so in many years. Last year we decided to host a Chanukah Party and it was big success. Year number two cemented the deal! Chanukah is now an official part of our holiday season! Latkes anyone!

I’m lumping shopping, wrapping and holiday specials together, because I have to admit I jumped on the online shopping bandwagon this year. With the exception of a few items, almost everything was purchased online making me more available to spend time with the boys.

I realized my little one had never seen The Nightmare Before Christmas. He really enjoyed it and so did the rest of us. Its still just as fabulous as ever! I shopped and wrapped while watching holiday specials. Thank you ABC Family!

Tis the season for party dresses, glitter, dancing…There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than spending time with friends and family. Lucky for us we had lots of fun opportunities to celebrate!

Okay, we didn’t get to do this project, but I had every intention of making it happen! We ran out of time. Maybe next year?

holiday checklist--15

One word: Instacart. Yep, I did all my holiday grocery shopping online this year and I loved it! Not sure what time it saved me, since we didn’t get to the craft… But not dragging all those groceries into the house was a nice bonus.

holiday checklist--16

Making cookies for Santa is one of my absolute favorite Christmas activities! There are certain things that just have to happen, like hearing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and making Santa’s Cookies. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without them! Also, Santa is very particular about “her” cookies!

Whether it’s going for a run, seeing a movie or dinner with the girls building in some time for myself is definitely on my list!

Of course we always take a photo in front of the tree. The boys are usually wearing matching pjs which they like to stay in all day on Christmas!  This year we took the picture on Christmas Eve. Check!

It’s Christmas Eve and I’ve finally made it to the end of my list… As you can see there are still a few unchecked boxes. I guess relaxing will have to be first on my list of Things To Do Tomorrow…  Merry Christmas!

Teenager In The HOUSE!

#coolestparentseverMy older son recently turned 13 and because it’s a milestone birthday something extra special was in order! Of course now he’s a teenager and planning something he and his friends would consider “cool” did present something of a challenge. I was up for the task!

When considering what direction this party would take there was only one clear choice: Video Games! Simon has never met a video game he didn’t like! I know I’m not the only parent with a video game fanatic on her hands and I’m sure some of you can probably relate.

The  Venue

Gone are the days of cute little kids running around our house and yard, these teenagers are big, loud and not just a little smelly, this party had to be anywhere else! We considered hiring a video game truck, but our street doesn’t really lend itself to that and I’m sure they’d find their way back inside the house in no time. Another option was hitting up the arcade at a nearby mini golf place, but I’m not a big fan of games that spit out tickets and something a little more private seemed in order…

#highscores

Enter the High Scores Interactive Arcade Museum located in Alameda, California. High Scores focuses mainly on the classic games of the 1980s and is available to rent for private parties or events. The decor is classic video game arcade with a jukebox and laser lights thrown in for effect. All the old favorites are present, Mario Bros, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Paper Boy, Frogger, even my personal favorite Crystal Castles! You name it they’ve got it!

#fixitfelixjr

We weren’t in the arcade 5 seconds before the kids, and most of the adults, made a direct beeline for the games! We took a break for cake toward the end of the party, but otherwise the “kids” had two blissful hours of nonstop play!

#ilovevideogames

High Scores was a huge success! The time flew by and no one wanted to go home at the end. I might be going out on a limb here, but I have a feeling the goal of throwing Simon a “cool” party was achieved! If you’re in the Bay Area or are planning a visit this place is definitely worth checking out. Its open to the public Wednesday thru Sunday and payment is per player/per hour so you won’t need coins or tokens.

The Cake(s)

Simons 13th Birthday-Twice a year I make an elaborate cake, one for each boy’s birthday. They get to pick the design. In keeping with our retro video game theme Simon asked that I make replicas of the controller from the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).  I enjoy baking, but what I love more is the challenge of decorating the cake! Game on!

How To Make NES Controller Cakes – Player 1 & Player 2

NES Controllers are long and thin, so I decided to make two one layer cakes for a more realistic effect. Two 9 x 13 cakes were baked and trimmed to the desired size. The printed template measured two times the size of the original controllers.

The cakes should be completely cooled before you trim them to size and then covered in a thin layer of buttercream.

Next you’ll want to prepare the fondant. I wanted light grey, so decided to make it myself using black food paste and white fondant. Using a toothpick add small amounts of the black food dye to the fondant and then knead until you achieve the desired color.

After rolling the fondant out transfer it to a piece of parchment paper and roll it up. When you are ready you can unroll the fondant right onto your frosted cakes.

Once the cakes have been covered with the base layer of fondant its time to start cutting out the small detail pieces. Use the template as a guide and remember to cut two sets of each shape if you’re making two controllers. A dab of water is all you need to “glue” the individual pieces together. The “cord” was made of black licorice.

Tis The Season… To Dress Up!

I love this time of year for many reasons, not the least of which are all the fun excuses to get dressed up! No matter the occasion for the next four weeks all events call for a little more glitter, glitz and glam! Parties, lunches, dinners, any excuse will do!

Because, it’s not exactly reasonable to purchase a new dress for every event… I have a few ideas in mind.

Idea #1: Making Something Old Into Something New

Recently when going through my closet I came across a few dresses that I hadn’t worn in ages, but I just couldn’t bring myself to donate. Since I wasn’t willing to give them up maybe I should try to wear them again? Why not see if I could refurbish them?

Once upon a time when I was dating my husband, he gave me a lovely dress for a holiday gift… and I still have it… and it (mostly) still fits! Okay, full disclosure: two kids and 17 years later I had to give myself a tiny bit of breathing room up top.

Here I am wearing the dress to the Last Call Millennium Ball in 1999 and again just last week to a celebration dinner in the city. I spent $65 dollars on tailoring and wallah a new dress! Not too shabby!

I was the matron-of-honor in my sister’s wedding 5 years ago and nice sister that she is I was able to choose my own dress. I picked up this amazing Emporio Armani at a pre-sale, not only unique, but very comfortable! It’s made of stretch wool and perfect for winter occasions. I’ve always loved this dress, but unlike the dress above this one was too big and needed to be taken in quite a bit.

Here I am wearing the dress in the wedding and I’ll be wearing it again 5 years later to a party next week! I spent $135 on the tailoring and I hope to wear it at least a few more times.

Idea #2: Rent The Runway

Lucky for me, I’ll be attending a number of fun events this season and while I am very pleased with the outcome of the two dresses above, I’d love a few more options.

I’ve decided to try renting a dress from a website called, Rent The Runway. Have you heard of it? It’s quite simple really, choose from the thousands of designer clothes and accessories, wear them to your event(s), and then return it all via UPS.

Although I have a number of friends who use Rent The Runway regularly, this will be my first time using it. There are so many fun options my fingers are crossed it’s a success!

The dress on the left is my first choice. I’ll be receiving two of them. One is a backup, on the off chance the sizing isn’t quite right. The outfit on the right is my second choice as insurance on the even bigger chance that the first one just doesn’t work at all. I get to keep both dresses for four days! I spent $120 dollars on rental fees and that includes the return shipping.

Just incase…

Things don’t go as planned with Rent The Runway… I do have a backup or a few!

Idea #3: Okay, I Did Pick Up A Few Items

My new faux fur leopard print jacket goes well with almost everything and keeps me warm to and from! Paired with a fresh new pair of black heels I’m all set!

For more casual occasions I picked up a faux leather hoodie and I love it paired with, well, just about everything!

Whatever you decide to go with, old made new, something rented or your tried and true favorites, have fun with it and enjoy the season!

How To Make An Apple Pie!

I’ve always enjoyed baking! Mainly I bake cakes, cupcakes and cookies for various holidays and birthdays. However, Tim’s absolute favorite is pie and I rarely make them. Mainly because anyone who bakes regularly knows making a good pie is much more difficult than it looks. It’s definitely easier to just buy one.

Recently I discovered an attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer that peels apples in about a nano-second! I saw a demo in the store and decided its time to start making pies! I even volunteered to bring one to our Thanksgiving Dinner today…

There are many recipes for Apple Pie, but after a few practice pies I decided to use a combination of two:

Aunt B’s Filling

5-7 apples cored, peeled and sliced

1 cup sugar

2 Tbsp flour

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

Dash salt

Mix and put into pie shell. Dot with 2 Tbsp butter or margarine

Bake at 400 about 50 min or until top is lightly brown

The Crust

The Gourmets Cookbook recipe for all butter pastry dough.

Pie Edits-9562

The Most Important Ingredient

I know this pie will be good because even though I’m no pie baking expert I made it with my dear friend Maria! We spent the day laughing, drinking wine, enjoying being together and making pie! Perfect!

Pie Edits-184427

We used some extra dough and filing to make these little fruit pies and they came out great! A fun treat for our families and honestly, we weren’t sure they would wait for today to eat pie. Insurance!

24 Hours in Los Angeles, Hilarystyle!

#dogtown15 years ago when we moved to the Los Angeles area as newlyweds I wasn’t too sure, but a few years in it was true love, 6-ish years later when circumstances dictated a move, my heart was broken. It’s safe to say I “left my heart in Los Angeles”. I know, I know the song doesn’t go that way, but I’m rewriting it.

No matter how long between visits, or where I’ve lived since, an arrival into LAX always feels like a homecoming. Just last week when given the opportunity to fly down for the night, sans kids, I jumped on it! A little LA fix was just what I needed!

How did I spend my time? Shopping, eating and wandering around the old neighborhood!

Venice’s Abbot Kinney

The moment I landed I dropped my bag at the hotel and made a beeline for Venice and more specifically Abbot Kinney!

#abbotkinneyLos Angeles is vast and there are many fantastic neighborhoods in which to shop and eat, so it can be hard to choose, but on this particular visit I was on a mission!

15 years ago this area was still on its way up and had been for a while, but its safe to say it’s arrived! Many of today’s most sought after fashion brands have stores on Abbot Kinney, some of which are one of a kind store fronts, not to mention there are many trendy bars and restaurants to choose from.

I know you’ll be surprised when I tell you that I found some fun items to bring home! All of which will be perfect for mixing and matching with the “essential items” I already had.

Santa Monica

Though not technically Los Angeles, Santa Monica is always on our must list when we head to SoCal, we lived there for 6+ years and its like coming home. The views of the ocean and beach from Ocean Avenue never get old.

Palihouse Hotel

We stayed at the Palihouse a charming old hotel located in our old neighborhood and walking distance from the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Place, the beach and Montana Avenue shopping! Though old, the rooms are spacious, clean and decorated in a somewhat quirky but fun style. The attention to detail is great and the location can’t be beat!

#palihouse

Walking up and down Montana Avenue is always a pleasure with its many shops to wander in and out of. Though it’s not fancy we love to stop for lunch at Rosti, a family friendly Italian restaurant on 10th and Montana. The goat cheese capellini with marinara is the best! If you decide to check it out keep in mind you’ll need to bring your own wine.

For me no trip to Los Angeles would be complete without a meal at either Furaibo or Hurry Curry! A perfect trip would include both, but hey I only had 24 hours…

Furaibo is a Japanese restaurant located on Sawtelle Boulevard (Little Osaka) in West LA. They are famous for their Japanese style chicken wings which are my favorite, but Tim loves the fish in a bowl which is essentially an entire fried fish the bowl is the fish!  This place is one of the more popular places on the block, but it’s definitely worth the wait!

Though there were many places and people I didn’t get to visit during this quick trip, I managed to spend time in Malibu, Venice, Santa Monica and West LA. I wandered aimlessly, shopped, ate and most importantly got my LA fix!

Until next time…

A Minion Birthday Party!

We love to throw parties in our house and especially theme parties! Choosing a theme for Elliot’s 5th birthday was easy because everyone in our house absolutely loves the MINIONS!

These days you can find lots of Minion party supplies in the stores, but the year we chose this theme there wasn’t much out there. Good thing we love DIY projects in our house! Since Elliot’s has a summer birthday we usually have traditional backyard parties, complete with games, a piñata and plenty of mayhem.

Party Games

#pinthegogglesontheminionOur main party game was Pin the Goggles on the Minion. We played this just like any “pin the… game” but we replaced the traditional blindfold with Minion goggles! Each child was provided with a pair of cardboard goggles which they tried to “pin” to the minion!

I thought this game would be so easy for the kids, but surprisingly it was just the right amount of challenging! I recommend using blue painters tape so you can reuse the game later or even hang up the cute poster in your child’s room after the party!

Creating the poster was easy, we found an online image of Dave the Minion and had the image enlarged and printed at a large format printer.

The Piñata

#minionpinataIf you want to make your own Minion Piñata you can find directions here, but for this party I was able to find a fabulous Minion piñata at an authentic piñata seller not too far from our home. This is always a huge hit with the kids and to make sure everyone walks away happy we make little treat kits and wrap them individually, one for each child. Everything was banana flavored of course!

The Cake

#minioncake

The birthday cake was chocolate with a fondant finish. To make Dave the Minion we used various colors of Wilton modeling chocolate. Dave’s hat and party favor are little cardboard pieces and the “bananas” are marshmallows. No one wanted to take Dave apart, so we kept him around and he lasted a year!

How to Make Minion Iron on Shirts!

#minionpartyfavorsYou’ll need the following supplies before you get started: cotton t-shirts, transfer paper for dark fabric if you decide to use yellow t-shirts, inkjet printer, lint brush, hot iron, scissors, wash and dry the t-shirts before getting started.

While you can probably find minion goggle images on the internet, most are not available in a high enough resolution to enlarge for a t-shirt. I’ve had great luck finding images on Etsy. I used these same images for everything from the t-shirts to the favor bags and game pieces.

Before printing the image onto the transfer paper it’s a good idea to do a test run with a plain piece of paper to make sure it’s in the paper bin properly. My favorite brand of transfer paper is Avery. Use the normal or best ink setting on your printer for the best results. Cut the images as close to the edge of the images as possible making sure there is very little white space.

In preparation for pressing your image, iron the t-shirt by itself to remove any wrinkles or moisture in the fabric. I also like to run a lint brush over the shirt to make sure there isn’t any laundry lint that could show through the images once they’re pressed on.

Press the images onto the t-shirt using the hottest setting on your iron and make sure to apply quite a lot of pressure with both hands. Move the iron around until you’ve gone over the entire image. Depending on the size of the image you’ll need between 30 to 90 seconds of pressing.

I purchased the t-shirts at Michael’s Craft Store for $3.99 Although they are not your traditional party favor, the kids love wearing them and it’s so fun to see them getting use long after the party is over!

#minionironon

The Party Decor

Just as we did for the party game, we used enlarged images of the Minions and decorated the house and yard. We also made our own window clings!

Making your own window clings is easy! We used the Klutz Window Art Kit and our own images. Do keep in mind that this project takes a full 24 hours to dry.

Adults Need Party Favors Too!

Closet Essentials for Autumn! The Basics!

#fallisintheairAutumn has always been my favorite season. I love the feel of a slight chill in the air, a rainy day, the changing of the leaves and the smell of a nearby fire. Of course with the arrival of these things also come fall fashions and just in time! By now I’ve grown tired of my summer attire and I am more than ready to get back to my “uniform”, jeans, Ts and boots!

I’ve been thinking about this post for a while now, but until this past week it hasn’t really felt much like fall in the Bay Area making it hard to think about wearing cool weather clothing. However, stores have been in fall mode for a number of months now and I must admit I’ve been tempted to pick up few new items here and there…

Of course before you go crazy purchasing the latest greatest, its helpful to have some basics to build on. With just a few items you can create a multitude of outfits all of which go together and then have fun adding in a bit of this and that to dress them up or down depending on the occasion! Lately I’ve been pairing dressier items with ultra casual pieces!

The Essentials

Three pair of pants: denim, green and black.

#closetessentials

I’ve chosen a dark wash denim as it’s easier to dress up, a pair of dark green cords and a pair of black “jean” style pants with some leather detailing. All of these can be worn, with flats or boots.

Two Jackets, Two Over shirts and Two Ts

Living in California means that even when the calendar says fall we still have pretty warm days, so layering is a good idea. Basic t-shirts in black and white go with everything, but its fun to add a little interest with a graphic of some sort, that way if you do peel off some layers it won’t be boring!  I also like choices so I’ve got a jean jacket which goes with everything and for those days when it’s nice to have something a little heavier I recently picked up a utility style jacket in a camo print. The latter is turning out to be just the right weight, especially when paired with a cardigan or an open front shirt. I tend to gravitate toward black, white, and grey because everything matches, but I like a pop of color too!

A Dress!

One can’t always wear jeans and you can’t go wrong with basic black dress! I’m choosing to pair it with an open front shirt to give it a more casual look, but adding a bit of jewelry and a cardigan would dress it up!

The possibilities Are Endless

Here I’ve mixed and matched to create a few examples, but throw in some jewelry, shoes, and other accessories and the sky is the limit!

The Halloween Edition!

The annual visit to the pumpkin patch… is it obligation or fun? For our family it’s some of both, but definitely leaning more towards the fun side!

#halloween@theritz

Like many families the tradition of visiting the pumpkin patch started when our oldest was just a baby and the boys have gone each and every year since. I did miss one year, I don’t remember why, but it must have been important, and I was heartbroken. So, even though finding time to go the pumpkin patch can feel like a chore, getting the kids to pose nicely for my annual photo is beyond frustrating, and living in California means our pumpkins will rot long before the big day, we go… and we like it!

The Obligatory Photo

Beyond the collection of perfectly shaped pumpkins my other main agenda item when visiting the pumpkin patch is getting that obligatory adorable photo of the kids. I don’t want to complain, but living in California means that the ideal pumpkin patch I remember from my childhood, just doesn’t exist. You know, the one with lots of giant pumpkins growing on curly green vines as far as the eye can see. Don’t forget the squishy mud you had to wade through to get to them. Who knows, maybe that’s not even real? It could be we bought our pumpkins at the local QFC? Mom?

Anyway, here in sunny California we have dusty dirt fields with a bit of hay strewn about and the occasional pumpkin here and there. At this point its late in the month, and pickings are getting pretty slim and so are the photo ops, we’ll just have to make it work… and we do!

I’ve dressed the boys in Halloween-ish type shirts and arranged a few pumpkins strategically, hoping to make a nice scene, but Elliot is easily distracted and keeps running off and darn that California sun, but Simon just can’t keep his eyes open no matter what direction I point him. I yell at them for a while and take about 100 bad photos before I give up and hope I got at least one decent shot. There are always the Halloween night photos? This is fun, right?!

We’re Having Fun Now!

There are many pumpkin patches in the Bay Area, but we usually head to Half Moon Bay, a favorite destination all year round. The weather was beautiful, so after we completed our pumpkin mission we ate outside at our favorite seafood restaurant, Barbara’s Fish Trap, and then took a lovely walk on the beach. Gotta love that California sun! We decided to end our day with a treat… Roasting marshmallows at the Half Moon Bay Ritz. The views were amazing and there were bagpipes playing! Okay, we are definitely having fun now!

Creating Our Pumpkin Masterpieces!

#hellokittypumpkinI’ve always enjoyed carving pumpkins and I generally choose something in the pop culture genre, Simon tends to go for something a bit more spooky and Elliot designs his own on the fly. Neither Simon, nor Elliot used patterns of any kind this year and both tried their hand at doing some sculpting! I had decided upon Hello Kitty and a hilarystyle.me pumpkin. Though I didn’t do any sculpting I did use acrylic paint to enhance Hello Kitty’s face and bow and I carved hilarystyle.me freehand.

If you decide to use paint, make sure to clean and dry the pumpkin before applying the paint and wait for each coat of paint to dry before applying the next one. If you live in a rainy place its best to keep your pumpkin undercover.

Roasting the pumpkin seeds was a Halloween tradition in my house and one I’ve enjoyed continuing with my own kids. For added flavor we like to leave a bit of the “pumpkin goo” on the seeds. I love the smell of them roasting!

#roastedpumpkinseeds

Heat the oven to 375 degrees and spread the seeds out in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Salt liberally before putting them into the oven for about 10 minutes. You’ll want to use a spatula to toss them around before putting them back into the oven for another 5 or so minutes. Don’t forget to salt them again! Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn!

Our Costumes!

I’ve always loved dressing up for Halloween even before I could use the kids as an excuse! Now, that I have two, the sky’s the limit! In recent years I’ve been everything from Bat Girl to a pirate and a day of the dead skeleton to the Black Swan. This year I’m going as a Harajuku Girl! We have a number of Halloween events planned, so I’ll be getting a lot of use out of my costume this year! Fun!

Buon Natale da Roma! Merry Christmas From Rome!

Fed up with doing all the holiday decorating, shopping, present wrapping and cooking when it seemed as though no one actually cared about any of it. I decided I was over it! “That’s it! I’m quitting Christmas!”, I announced to my family!

The following year we spent Christmas in Rome! “Don’t worry. Santa will find you wherever we are.” I told the boys and it was true! 😉

#colosseumxmastree

If you’re wondering, the holiday season is a great time to visit Rome. Fantastic even! The Christmas and holiday decorations are beyond compare, the weather is temperate and the lines are short. In fact with the exception of a few places there were almost no lines for anything. It turned out to be the simplest and best Christmas I think we’ve ever had.

The Holiday Decor

#nowthosearesomelightsI think I can safely say that I have never visited a city with more holiday decorations than Rome! There was scarcely a corner left untouched by festivity. It’s simply spectacular! Where you might think that the streets would be deserted on the eve of a major holiday, it was the exact opposite. The amount of people who are out and about strolling and enjoying the lights and atmosphere is simply amazing.

Visiting the Colosseum was a highlight of our visit!

The Christmas Market in the Piazza Navona

We visited the Christmas market in Piazza Navona one evening and had such a lovely time. There were all sorts of holiday themed treats and it was incredibly festive. We picked up a tiny tree for our hotel room and each of us picked out two mini ornaments to decorate it with. A small strand of lights and a little angel tree topper finished it off! We set it up on our hotel room desk! When it was time to leave we brought all of our ornaments home with us and we hang them on our tree every year!

Piazza Navona is also a great place to explore during the day. There is a beautiful fountain and many cafes where you can people watch and grab a coffee.

The Vatican

No trip to Rome would be complete without a trip to the Vatican and it was especially lovely decorated for the holiday season. Not only were their multiple creches on the inside of St. Peter’s, but a large portion of St. Peter’s Square was filled with the biggest nativity scene I’ve ever seen. No pun intended!

Via dei Condotti

#viacondottiComplete with red carpet and “crystal chandeliers” the Via Dei Condotti was all dressed up for the holidays! One of Rome’s most fashionable streets it is located at the foot of the Spanish Steps. Many of fashion’s biggest names have shops here, Dior, Gucci, Valentino, Armani, Jimmy Choo, and Prada, to name just a few. It’s no surprise that the holiday decorations on this street were nothing short of stunning.

Santa? Is that you?

Traditionally we have our big holiday meal on Christmas Eve. Rather then go out for dinner we decided it would be more fun to order room service! After all we were taking a break from the usual holiday traditions this year! A little while later when the food arrived, Elliot, who was only 31/2 at the time, heard the knock at the door and yelled out, “It’s Santa!”

Yep! The holiday magic had followed us to Rome! I think we enjoyed that Christmas Eve dinner more than any other. At least I know I did!

Later that evening after the boys were asleep Santa stealthily put the tiny packages she had hidden in my suitcase as well as the Italian candy she’d discovered during the week into the boys stockings also hidden in the suitcase. Under the tiny tree they went!

“Mommy! Daddy! Wake up! Santa was here, he found us!” “Didn’t I tell you “he” would find us wherever we are…”
