Happy Halloween!

#halloweenwhitewedding

October flew by this year and we hardly noticed… Sunny warm hot days fooled us into thinking we had all the time in the world. Oops! I woke up the morning before Halloween feeling guilty that we hadn’t done any of our annual traditions.

#makinghalloweenIt was too late for our annual visit to the pumpkin patch and our photo session among the pumpkins, and the decorations will have to stay in storage until next year, but we ended up creating some new traditions, decorating pumpkins and baked goods, watching Halloween themed movies, and touring our neighborhood, which has some of the best Halloween decorations I’ve ever seen.

The Pumpkins

#dayofthedeadpumpkinThis year Tim and Simon went to the grocery store to get pumpkins, while Elliot and I stayed home, it was great! I absolutely didn’t miss wandering around in the pumpkin patch looking for just the right one. Very liberating! I did miss out on the cute photo tho…

I usually do a pop culture pumpkin, but since everything else is different this year… I went with a Day of the Dead theme. After I carved out the eyes and nose I painted, colored with sharpie pens, and even used modpodge to get my finished look!

#sugarskullpumpkin

Simon and Elliot both opted not to carve this year. Simon used paint as a base and then used modpodge to attach the meme he created on his computer!

#memepumpkin

Elliot drew his Pokemon Bellsprout design directly onto his pumpkin with sharpie pens.

#bellsproutpumpkinIf you decide to decorate your pumpkin with paint and sharpie pens, it’s a good idea to dull the tip of your Sharpie prior to using it on the painted surface or it might scrape off the paint.

The Baking

#donutsAs long as I’ve had kids I’ve been baking sugar cookies for Halloween, but we’ve been enjoying a lot of donuts lately and decided it might be fun to make Halloween donuts instead! Williams Sonoma has a really nice and inexpensive donut pan, which worked perfectly! We had a great time coming up with fun “scary” donuts!

The Neighborhood

We stumbled across these amazing decorations while driving home one evening and just knew we had to bring the kids back to see them! A pirate ship, a white wedding, and a haunted dog walker were just a few of the amazing decorations at this one home!

#santamonicahalloween

Though many of our annual traditions went by the wayside this year there is one we won’t be leaving out: trick or treating! With neighborhoods like this to walk through I’m counting on an interesting, but hopefully, not too spooky Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

The Last Bookstore…

#thelastbookstore

#thelastbookstore

#thelabyrinthA labyrinth of books, the comic section, the first edition vault, (literally, it was inside an actual vault), the artist studios, and a rare book room were just a few of the places we explored during our recent visit to The Last Bookstore.

#thelastbookstore

Full of character and visually stunning this place is a book lovers dream and well worth a visit.

#look

Our visit to this wonderful place definitely gave me pause for thought…

#booklabyrinthA self proclaimed voracious reader there was a time when I would have spent hours perusing bookstore shelves in search of the next great read. Often becoming lost between the pages of a book or even the latest gossip rag I would not even realize the hours had melted away. Just one more chapter…

#thelastbookstore
Fun details everywhere

Those days seem to be coming to an end, at least the part where I spend hours perusing the bookstore shelves. With the introduction of e-readers, iPads and other “smart” devices many printed materials are going the way of the dinosaur, and if they aren’t, the brick and mortar stores that sell them definitely are.

Los Angeles The Last Bookstore
Amazing pencil art

I admit there are other things keeping me from what used to be my favorite escape. As I’ve gotten older both my eyesight and my attention span seem to be failing me at a rapid pace, but I can’t really blame eyesight, can I? More likely its all the time I spend on social media, writing this blog, binge watching TV shows and playing my favorite app that have played a large part in ….

#magnifiedWhat was I talking about? Oh yes, when I heard about that cool book seller in Downtown Los Angeles that not only sells books but sells them with flair, I just knew I had to go there!

#thelastbookstore

With the way things are going, the appropriately named, The Last Bookstore, might well just turn out to be the last bookstore! And while I really hope that isn’t the case, if it does turn out that way, then this gem of an establishment is more than qualified to carry the torch.

#thelastbookstore
Even the counter is made of books

A few years ago, while wandering with one of my boys, we came across a typewriter. He wondered what it was…  It’s not a stretch to assume that before too long kids might be wondering the same thing about books.

If that does (gasp!) happen, you know where to go… The Last Bookstore.

Tourist In My Own Town

#huntingtoncactusgardenI’ve got a serious case of wanderlust, and I’m pretty sure it’s not going anywhere, so I’d better get going… But where?  While it’s not always possible to travel far, if one is so inclined, it is possible to find fun and even a bit of adventure closer to home and it’s a whole lot cheaper too! Lets go!

Lucky for us, our recent move to Southern California makes playing tourist in our own town easy. With so many amazing things to see and do the hardest part was deciding where to go first…

The Huntington Botanical Gardens

SoCal Adventures: Huntington Botanical GardensOur most recent discovery, The Huntington Botanical Gardens, has something for everyone! Museums, a library and acres of beautiful and unique gardens, including a fabulous children’s garden! Entrance tickets are all inclusive, but because the Huntington has so much to offer it would be tough to see everything in one visit, so membership seemed like our best option.

#huntingtongardens
Ready, Set, Go!

We spent most of our time wandering and playing in the gardens…

#huntingtonrosegarden

…But also enjoyed the exhibitions on medicine, electricity, and the night sky.

The exhibit showcasing some the Huntington’s collection of original books, documents and letters was a favorite of mine. Especially interesting to me were Jack London’s draft of White fang, Henry VIII’s document concerning Luther and a collection of Shakespeare’s works!

The Japanese Garden

huntington-japanese-garden-9072

As soon as you enter the Huntington’s Japanese Gardens it’s easy to understand how this magical spot has attracted more than 20 million visitors since it opened in 1928. The garden is 9 acres and includes examples of all the traditional Japanese style gardens.

The Chinese Garden

huntington-chinese-garden-9100

One of the newest gardens at The Huntington, The Chinese Garden, a collaboration between Californian and Chinese gardeners, is also one of the largest Chinese gardens outside of China. If you’re hungry after all the exploring, this garden features a restaurant overlooking the water!

SAMSUNG SoCal Adventure: Huntington Botanical Gardens

The Desert Garden

#cactusgardenHaving recently taken more of an interest in my home garden the Desert Garden was of particular interest to me. Its over 100 years old and with over 2000 species it’s the largest collection of succulents in the world! I loved the vibrant colors of the cactus flowers and we saw a number of creatures scurry about during our visit! Be sure to stay on the path in this garden!

#desertblooms

The Children’s Garden

SoCal Adventures: Huntington Botanical GardenI must confess that we visited the Huntington Children’s Garden once before, 12 years ago when Simon was a toddler. If you have young children this garden is the place for you! It’s a magical spot with plenty to explore and touch and do. Water play, magnetic sand, tunnels, a playhouse and volcano, and so much more! When visiting this garden a change of clothing might not be a bad idea!

Donuts Are The New Cupcakes!

#crosstowndoughnutsDoughnuts are the new cupcakes, which in turn were the new bagel or were they the new frozen yogurt? It’s hard to keep track, because very much like fashion, food fads come and go.

#donutsarethenewcupcakes

Beignets from Cafe du Monde in NOLA have always been my personal favorites, the king of donuts! In fact, other than trips to New Orleans, I go years without eating any type of donut because IMHO, there is no other donut. That is, there WAS no other…

#shakethebagThese days with gourmet donut shops popping up on just about every corner it’s getting harder to resist. I’m not usually one to jump on the bandwagon, but, Hey… I’m jumping on! Of course the kids and Tim will need to assist! Care to join us? Keep reading…

DonutsThis list will be our version of a best of, and as we currently reside in SoCal, many of our donuts will be located here, however as this fad seems to have taken the world by storm, I’ve included a few places worth mentioning from two of my other favorite cities. The more the merrier!

Honorable mentions:

District Donuts – New Orleans, Louisiana

#districtdonutsWe discovered District 2 years ago and when I’m not in NOLA, I drool over their daily donut creations on Instagram. They’re not beignets, but these guys sure know how to make a donut! Not to mention their sliders and brew (coffee) are pretty great too!

Crosstown Doughnuts – SOHO London, England

#pb&jdonuts

We stumbled across this yummy place one afternoon on a recent visit to London, we found ourselves back the very next day. The cinnamon rolls were my favorite! Alas there are no photos, as we ate them up too quickly for pictures!

hilarystyle’s Top Donut Shops

Okay, so there are only 5* donut shops on this list, I fully intended to make this a top 10, but between ice cream distractions and repeat tastings, I’ve decided my waistline just can’t take a top 10 list, so without further ado, starting with #5, here are hilarystyle’s top 5 donuts in the greater Los Angeles area.

5. Stan’s Donuts – Westwood, Los Angles

Stan’s donuts were decent, but not spectacular and a bit on the dry side. We sampled maple glazed and the shop specialty a peanut butter filled donut with chocolate glaze and chocolate chips. In fairness we went to Stan’s around 9pm on a weeknight, but parking was so tough, I’m not sure its worth going back for a second try.

4. DKs Donuts – Santa Monica

#dksdonutsI must admit my first impression of Dks wasn’t the best. It wasn’t super clean, but it was super popular. That says something… doesn’t it? There were many donut choices ranging from strange and unusual (Ube, anyone?) to the classics. We sampled a strawberry crueler, red velvet oreo, peanut butter chocolate, a cronut and a cinnamon twist. The donuts were fresh and we all agreed the peanut butter and chocolate was the best!

3. Blue Star Donuts – Abbot Kinney, Venice

Offering unique flavors like Habanero PB&J, trendy flavors like maple bacon, and the more traditional like lemon poppyseed you’ll find something for everyone at Blue Star. Elliot loves the Meyer lemon & key lime curd, but the crisp edges of the lemon poppyseed make it my personal favorite. Maybe it reminds me of the crisp edges on beignets?

2. Sidecar Doughnuts – Santa Monica

We love this place and until very recently it was hands down our number one! The doughnuts are beautifully made, always fresh and I’ve yet to taste one I didn’t enjoy. Simon loves them so much he knows the shop hours by heart! We’ve had multiple flavors including: lemon meringue pie, vanilla twist, huckleberry, maple bacon, and more, but Simon and I both agree that the vanilla twist is our favorite!

#happybirthdaydonuts
Birthday Donuts from Sidecar!

1. Cafe Dulce – Little Tokyo, Los Angeles

DonutsSwooping in at the last second to claim the number one spot is Cafe Dulce in Downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo. Though technically not a donut shop, donuts dominated their pastry case and after tasting one I can see why! We shared the strawberry cream though I would have loved to try the Fruity Pebbles donut or the Chocolate Creamy donut…The dough was the lightest, fluffiest dough we’ve had yet and the flavor was delicious. I am thankful this place isn’t near my house, but I’m sure we will find our way back!

Donuts

Artisanal, traditional, old school, specialty, trendy and unique…

Which one’s your favorite?

You’d better hurry, because, ice cream…

Los Angeles! Surfing? Me?!

I went surfing! I know for many people this might not seem like a big deal, but just swimming in the ocean is on my list of “I don’t do that” and the idea of getting on a surf board is so far from my comfort zone, it’s not even on the “I don’t do that” list. But this past weekend when the opportunity unexpectedly presented itself, something came over me and I just couldn’t say no.

Los Angeles Surfing

Guess What?! I loved It!

This is strange because, you see, I’m afraid. Afraid of failure, afraid of injury, afraid of disappointing others, afraid or letting life pass me by, afraid of upside down roller coasters, swimming in the ocean, bugs, especially bees, flying, losing stuff, getting lost, mushrooms and the list goes on… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not walking around afraid all the time and for the most part these fears don’t rule me, but there were times when I was younger that I let my fears hold me back and I missed out on so much!

SAMSUNG CSC

NO MORE!

Los Angeles SurfingI don’t know why or what changed exactly, but more often than not I’m facing these fears, trying new things and letting my guard down and I love it! Okay, I admit it I still run away when anything with a stinger comes close, but that’s my fight or flight instinct kicking in, right?! Go with me on that one, okay?!

Los Angeles Surfing

Recently some close friends came to town for a weekend of surfing and invited us along. Wanting to spend time with them I committed to a beach day and thought I’d watch everyone else swim and surf while I held down the beach blanket and collected lunch for everyone… because, you know, I don’t do ocean swimming.

Los Angeles SurfingEven I was surprised when I was asked if I wanted to give it a try and my answer was YES! Because even with my “lets do this thing” attitude the idea of swimming in the waves, let alone attempting to surf them was still pretty daunting. I was afraid, but I mentally told myself to get over it and get out there because you never know unless you try.

It Turned Out To Be A Family Affair!

Los Angeles Surfing

Tim and the Kids Surfed Too! While Elliot wasn’t too sure and just rode the board in on his belly, and Tim and I each got up a few times over the course of the weekend, Simon was a complete natural! Maybe it’s all the long boarding he does, or maybe he’s just got amazing balance, but whatever the cause, he just stood up and rode the board into shore time and time again!

Los Angeles Surfing

I was pretty proud of myself for facing my fears and getting out there (two days in a row) with the added bonus of actually standing up a few times, but the real highlight of my weekend was watching my son find true happiness on the surfboard and in the ocean and knowing that he’s found something he truly loves!

This is happiness…

Keep Calm & Disneyland!

Disneyland Big Thunder MountainI spent an incredibly relaxing day at Disneyland the other day! Yes, you heard me… incredibly relaxing… at Disneyland. Yes, there were crowds, lines and heat, after all it is summer and I was in Disneyland. However, having visited more times than I can count with every combination of people imaginable I feel like I’ve  got a pretty good handle on keeping calm and Disneyland at the same time and you can too!

DisneylandI know some of you might be thinking, how is this even possible? Yes, Disneyland is crowded, expensive and touristy, but it’s also magical, beautiful and fun!

DisneylandIt’s all in the mindset… understanding that it’s just not possible to do it all, especially if you only have one day, and that trying would only serve to ruin the day and everyone’s good time… basically the same philosophy I use when traveling to far away places when time is an issue. Time is always an issue. There is never enough time in disneyland! However, it’s still very possible to see many of the attractions and feel like you’ve gotten your money’s worth while at the same time keeping calm and enjoying yourself!

Here are some handy tips:

  1. The FastPass system is incredibly useful, but remember to pay close attention to FastPass return times. You’ll be turned away if you arrive after your ride window has closed. Keep in mind that the more popular rides can run out of FastPasses for the day.
    Disneyland
  2. Did you know that if you’re a family with a younger child you can take turns riding without having to wait in the line all over again? Just ask for a Rider Switch Pass at the beginning of the line! The Rider Switch option is available on attractions that have a minimum height requirement. For example: California Screamin’!
    #californiascreamin
  3. Try to visit the busiest attractions while others are viewing the parades or fireworks show.
    Disneyland
  4. To avoid the lunch and dinner crowds consider eating your meals a bit on the early or late side, or better yet skip the traditional sit down meal and grab a hearty snack to go!
    #chiliconequeso
  5. Did you know you can purchase Dole Whip in the Tiki Room waiting area? Yep, They serve the popular treat from both sides of the hut!  Yes, even if you aren’t attending the show.
    Disneyland
  6. Radiator Springs Racers runs out of FastPasses very early in the day and the lines are always incredibly long, but if you don’t mind riding alone, try the Single Rider line, your party can wait in line together until the very last moment. The best part is that the Single Rider Line can be as short as 15 minutes while the Stand By Line is as long as 120 minutes! This also works great for California Screamin’, the Matterhorn and Splash Mountain! However, you need to be at least 8yo to ride alone.
    #radiatorspringsracers
  7. Wear comfortable clothing no matter what!! Your comfort is more important than style! Even if the days are warm the nights can be chilly here in SoCal, so bring something with sleeves.
    Disneyland
  8. When waiting for It’s A Small World stay in the line to the right, its always faster. I know it looks longer, but trust me!
    Disneyland
  9. There are many walk up food options, but if you’re interested in dining at the Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, Ariel’s Grotto or any of the Fine/Character dining locations reservations should be made well in advance. Everyone should try Character Dining at least once!
    Disneyland
  10. Have you heard of Hidden Mickeys? There are many hidden surprises all over the parks. We even found hidden images in the table at the  Carthay Circle restaurant! There are also many other Easter eggs around the park so keep your eye out!
    Disneyland
  11. No one is too young or old for Disneyland and if they’re under 3 it won’t cost extra to bring them along, however you’ll have the memory of their first experience!
    Disneyland
  12. No one does fireworks quite like Disneyland, so if you’ve never seen them it’s worth the wait, and for the best viewing (in front of the castle is best) there will be a wait! Plan to claim your spot about 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to show time and then take turns holding down the fort and waiting for the magic to begin. Trust me, it’s worth it!
    Disneyland
  13. Did you know there is a wonderful baby care center located at the far end of Main Street just on the other side of Main Street Photo! Complete with high chairs, all the baby supplies you can think up including food and diapers and adorable tiny little toilets for the potty training set. It’s the perfect place to drop in and take care of all your baby business! So there are no excuses!
    Disneyland
  14. Ever wonder what its like inside Sleeping Beauty’s Castle? Guess what, you can go inside! Just to the left after you walk through the portcullis there is a doorway, walk up the stairs and follow the corridor. You can watch the story unfold in the action view windows located along the castle’s passages. You’ll come out on the opposite side about 5 minutes later!
    Disneyland
  15. Visit lands and try rides both in the day and again after dark! You’ll be surprised at how different they feel. My two favorite after dark ride experiences are Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Mad Hatter Teacups and don’t miss Radiator Springs after dark it’s amazing!

  16. Try stuff on! Hats, slippers, costumes, you name it… Disneyland shops have it all! If you can’t try on or wear a silly hat at Disneyland, where can you? Better yet, bring a friend and try stuff on together!
    Disneyland
  17. Stop and smell the flowers! Beyond everything else it has to offer Disneyland grounds are not only impeccable, but there are beautiful gardens and flowers everywhere you look!
    Disneyland
  18. Use the photo pass system and have your photo taken on the rides, with characters, or in front of Disneyland’s many famous landmarks! Our family has an album filled with photos from all our previous visits and it’s amazing how much we’ve all changed over the years!
    Disneyland
  19. Remember don’t expect to do everything, but do expect to: Keep Calm & Disneyland!
    Disneyland

If you’ve been to Disneyland before you already have your favorites, but just incase you haven’t or are looking for some new experiences, Simon, Elliot and I have put together a partial list of our “can’t miss” attractions, treats and shops!

  1. Disneyland popcorn
    Disneyland
  2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (especially at night)
    Disneyland
  3. Carmel Apples from the Pooh Corner shop are IMHO the very best

  4. Mickey’s Premium Ice cream bars

Los Angeles! The Hollywood Sign!

Recently, after almost a decade away we moved back to Southern California, and while we really enjoyed living here the first time around, it wasn’t until we moved away that I realized just how much we hadn’t seen or done. Last time we were newlyweds, with full time jobs, a small child and an even smaller bank account… Now we are back and this time I’m doing it right!

Los Angeles Hollywood Sign

Staycation!

Los Angeles Griffith Park ObservatoryThere’s a reason Southern California is one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations and there’s no reason we shouldn’t take advantage of it just the way a tourist would! Not only that, I really want my boys to get a sense of their new home and all it has to offer! Pulling up a list of “Things to do in Los Angeles” on Google, Simon’s first choice was the Hollywood Sign! What a great idea! Not only is it one of the most famous icons in Los Angeles and the world, but it would be new for me too making it the perfect place to start!

The Hollywood Sign

Los Angeles Hollywood SignFirst things first, you can’t actually get to the sign, not legally anyway, and since I tend to be a “stay on the path” kind of girl and setting good examples for my children is key, we needed to find another way. We consulted the Sign’s official website and learned that there are a number of optimal viewing spots around town. One of which was the Griffith Park Observatory located in… Griffith Park. Perfect! We would visit the Sign and the Observatory and check two of LA’s most famous institutions off our list at the same time!!

Spectacular Views!

Los Angeles Griffith Park Observatory

Looking out from the Observatory and it’s grounds there are incredible views in every direction and I imagine on a clear day you can see practically forever. It was somewhat hazy on the day of our visit and we could still see an incredibly long way. If, like me, you love to take photos keep in mind that although the view of the Hollywood Sign from this location is great, you’ll still need a decent long range lens on your camera to get a good close up photo*. There are also many hiking trails in the park, which would probably offer different viewpoints of the sign, but they won’t lead you to the sign, not if you want to “stay on the path.”

Los Angeles is a very large city, not just in terms of people, but square miles as well, so depending on where you’re staying be prepared for a long drive with a lot of traffic. However, it is worth it and the good news is that most of your visit will be free! Yes, that’s right the parking, sign viewing, Observatory tours and entrance to the halls of space are all free! If you’re interested in visiting the planetarium or eating at the End of the Universe Cafe you’ll spend some money, but otherwise this is a free activity!

Santa Monica! Beach!

#santamonica

This way to paradise…

Everyone has their own version of paradise, but when I think of paradise the first place that comes to mind is Santa Monica, California! It has the community feel of a small beach town*, but with all the benefits of a big city (Los Angeles) right next door!

I would consider Santa Monica the perfect family beach. It has just about everything a person would think up when dreaming of the perfect beach day!

Here is just a sampling of what Santa Monica Beach has to offer:

  • Long wide stretches of soft warm sand dotted with brightly colored umbrellas, perfect for picnicking, body surfing, and sandcastle building,
  • A 22 mile long paved path stretching from the Pacific Palisades to Torrance perfect for biking, running, roller blading or just plain walking, along the way you’ll find playgrounds, bike rentals, ice cream shops, burger joints and shopping.
  • A pier complete with an amusement park, a mini aquarium and a carousel!

Even with all the activities that Santa Monica Beach has to offer, there are times when it seems like you have your own private beach, with no one around other than the occasional surfer or person passing by.

Muscle Beach

#musclebeach

Just south of the Pier you’ll find the original Muscle Beach, which features loads of gymnastics equipment, the Chess Park and easy access to the Carousel. My boys and I have always enjoyed trying out all the equipment. Though I must admit its pretty challenging!

Beautiful views

#hotelview

Fantastic views of the beach, ocean and pier can be seen from Palisades Park which is perched on the coastal bluffs, which run along Ocean Avenue. The Park is a great place to view the sunset and wandering along the path in the evenings, especially when the moon is out is a favorite activity of mine.

Shopping

Though I do enjoy an afternoon at the beach, I’m always up for a stroll and some shopping! Just a short walk from the beach you’ll find world class shopping and big name stores at the Santa Monica Place mall and on the pedestrian friendly Third Street Promenade. Venture just a little further south and you’ll find Main Street which is lined with one of a kind boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, and though not technically Santa Monica I always love a trip to Abbott Kinney in Venice which is just a tiny bit further!

Where to Stay

#kickinit

Santa Monica is a popular tourist destination, so hotels can be pricey especially in the summer months. Here are my thoughts on the hotels we’ve stayed at most recently:

The Georgian – ***

Located on Ocean Avenue, this place couldn’t be more convenient within easy walking access to everything Santa Monica has to offer, and the rates do reflect that. However it is on the older side and could use some updating. The rooms were fine as were the common areas, but nothing special. There are no services after hours, so if you’re hungry or looking for a drink this isn’t the place.

The Hilton Double Tree – ****

A tiny bit off the beaten path this hotel fits the bill in many other ways. The rates are fair  and the rooms are large , and with a separate bedroom and pullout couch in the living area all four of us were able to spread out. There is a pool which my kids really enjoyed as well as a workout facility.

The Shore – ****

Steps from the Santa Monica Pier the Shore is a trendy eco-friendly  hotel with rooms on the smaller size. My favorite part about the Shore is the pool area! Elliot likes it too!

Paradise

All year long you’ll find warm days, soft sand, ocean breezes, cool nights, and everywhere you look beautiful flowers… Santa Monica…

*Santa Monica has a population of 87,000, but it’s right next door to Los Angeles with its population of 3.8M!
