Happy Anniversary Hilarystyle.me!

Today marks the One Year Anniversary of Hilarystyle.me, and I’m pretty excited about this milestone! You might be surprised to read that putting myself “out there” isn’t always easy and pushing the Publish button that first time, was not just a little bit nerve-wracking. Many things were going through my mind: would anyone be interested in this blog, care what I have to say, find my advice on travel, fashion, or fun useful? I pushed it anyway, faced my fears and… Wallah!

Here WE are one year later and apparently, the answer is a big YES! I am definitely proud of myself, but more importantly, I am grateful to all of you for following, reading, and commenting week after week!

DIY: Union Jack Play Table! Part 1…

#diyunionjack

#diyunionjackAs I mentioned in a recent post, we’ll be moving to a new home in August, and I have been doing my best to sort through all the stuff we’ve accumulated over the years. I’ve been donating, recycling and trashing stuff for weeks! It feels great!

The boys have always shared a room (with almost no complaint), but our new home  will allow each of them to have their own room. Simon is really looking forward to personalizing his space, but Elliot is “letting” me help with his design. Because they’ve been sharing we are a little short on furniture, so I’ve salvaged our old and forgotten, (read: buried under a mountain of junk) play table and decided to repurpose it…

#DIYunionjack

Step 1: Choose A Design!

#hunterbootsChoosing a table top design was a no brainer! It’s no secret I’m an anglophile! A lover of Cadbury, Mini Cooper, English Breakfast Tea, Penhaligons, rainy days & wellies, and of course the Union Jack. It doesn’t hurt that my favorite color is red with blue coming in a close second! Lucky for me Elliot agrees!

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies!

DIY Union Jack Table

The Union Jack is a somewhat complicated design with multiple colors, so I chose to use chalk paint, which is versatile, requires almost no prep, and dries very quickly. I found a great drawing of the flag online which helped ensure that my flag would be “flying” correctly!

Supplies: Blue Dawn, chalk paint, chalk paint brushes, lintless shop towels, microfiber cloths or an old t-shirt, blue painters tape, paint stir sticks, razor blades, drop cloth, ruler, scissors, clear wax or polyurethane (your choice), kraft paper.

DIY Union Jack Table

Elliot already has quite a bit of blue furniture, so I used Napoleonic Blue, Emperor Silk Red, and Pure White for the flag and painted the legs and underskirt Aged Grey.

Step 3: Choose & Prepare your work area

Cover your work area and set up all your supplies. I chose my front porch for this project and not only did I have to contend with rain, wind and sun, but the bugs and dust were also quite troublesome. Chalk paint has little to no odor, so if you have the space you might consider painting your project indoors. I found that the paint works best if it’s not too hot or cold.

Step 4: Let’s Get To Work!

Before you start painting it’s a good idea to give your table a quick wash with Blue Dawn and then rinse with water. Now you’re ready! I was so excited to get started on my design I chose to paint the flag first!

I taped off and painted one color at a time, the downside was that this created a few extra steps when it came to taping, but the upside was that I had been undecided about the color of the legs and underskirt, this gave me time to think about it. I applied three coats of paint with 30 minutes drying time between each layer and then left it to completely dry overnight. I repeated this process again for the white and the red.

Once the flag was complete it was covered with a protective layer of paper and the legs and skirt were painted with two coats of light grey.

Depending on the look you’re going for there are different brush options. A round brush will give you less control over your brush strokes and if you’re going for a more aged look this might be the one for you. I wanted a very uniform brush stroke and used a flat brush to achieve this look. Chalk paint is quite thick, but I found that first dipping my brush into water and then into the paint made it much easier to spread.

Don’t worry if the first coat of paint looks a bit streaky, it won’t look like that after your second coat and by the time my third coat dried the finish was smooth and even.

DIY Union Jack Table-Now that I’d finished painting it was time to remove the blue tape. It looked great! I used a small flat brush to touch up a few spots and again let them dry overnight.

#diyunionjack

Step 5: The finishing touch!

Your last step once you’ve finished painting is to apply a sealant. Initially I planned on using a wax sealer, but thankfully I decided to test the waxing technique on a little chair first. I discovered that the waxing technique is harder than it sounds and in order to achieve the finish I was after I needed just the right air temperature, amount of wax and applied pressure. Not to mention practice!

#diyunionjackI was worried my inexperience with waxing would destroy the design I had worked so hard to create. Not only that, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to put that much muscle into three more chairs and a table. Tim mentioned that spraying the table with polyurethane would be my best option, and after quite a bit of research I decided he was right! This would not only seal the paint, but also provide a more forgiving surface. It is a play table after all!

Tim was kind enough to assist me with this final step as he has some experience using this material and I was happy to accept! We picked an open area in the yard, away from the driveway or anything else that might catch some of the overspray. Before getting started we used a microfiber cloth to wipe away any dust and then applied the first coat of sealant. In total we applied three coats of sealant allowing two hours set time in between each coat.

#diyunionjack

Stay tuned for part two of this post, the chairs…

Mom Stuff: Ripping Off The Bandage!

#bandages

#rippingoffthebandageWe’re in the dark about so many things before becoming parents. One of them is how your heart literally breaks the first time your child suffers pain of any kind, and each and every time it happens thereafter. I will never forget the first shots, the first time they fell down, or the first time their feelings were hurt at school.

As far as physical injuries went it wasn’t long before my boys grew to hate bandages. While it soothed their initial pain, the fear of having them ripped off was too great.

#rippingoffthebandageI wasn’t ever sure how to handle it… How should I rip off the bandage? Slow or quick? Should I rip at the count of three, or fib and say I was counting to three, but rip at one? Maybe I should just do it a little bit at a time?

The Proverbial Bandage

As they’ve gotten older (and more coordinated) it’s become more about soothing emotional injury. In my opinion this is the much more difficult of the two… It’s even worse if you’re the cause. For example, giving your child bad or difficult news?

How do you deliver? Slow, or quick? All at once, or a little bit at a time? Is complete honesty the best policy?

1…2…3…RIPPPPP!

Recently, when I had to tell my boys 1, 2… WE’RE MOVING 3! I had the chance to find out.

Yep, see how I did that? Started out a little slow but then… riiiiip!

Wait! What?

After 8 years in the Bay Area we will be heading back to Southern California at the end of this summer.

While we are very excited about our new home and life in SoCal we are equally as heartbroken about leaving our NorCal family. We were so lucky 8 years ago when we landed in one of the best communities anywhere and leaving will be incredibly difficult. Friendships like these don’t just come and go and we know we’re in it for the long haul no matter where we call home!

Actually this wasn’t how we told the kids, this time…Oops! Yes, we tried that method previously and it didn’t go over well. Lesson learned. This time we included them in the decision making and house hunting process as much as we could and though it’s bittersweet they’re pretty excited about their close proximity to many of the fun things SoCal has to offer!

In the meantime we’ve got a lot of fun happening around our house between now and our upcoming move, which means many more posts about not only recent travels but future travels as well. we are looking forward to a six week journey around Europe to keep us very occupied! So exciting!

Hopefully I won’t need to rip off  any bandages in the near future but should the need arise… How should I do it? 1, 2, 3…

#rippingoffthebandage

Though not in anyway complete here are just a few photos representing some of the amazing memories we’ve created over the past 8 years.

Blogging Awards! I’ve Been Nominated…

Sharing my love of the things I enjoy most comes naturally to me as it’s an inherited family trait. Hi Dad! Writing long personally tailored emails to friends about my travels or party ideas was happening more and more and I had been thinking about creating a place to store this information for future use. That’s when I decided to start Hilarystyle.me.

hilarystyle blog header tim

Not really sure what to expect, I set two goals for myself:

The first smaller goal was to compile the information on the blog along with a few photos and links to our favorite places. This way if friends inquired about our travels I could point them in the direction of the blog.

My second larger scale goal was really more of a hope, the idea that maybe my experiences and thoughts would find their way out onto the web and actually be of interest to other people. You know, people who don’t already know me! Maybe no one would hit the “follow button” or care what I had to say, but I’d never know if I didn’t take a chance and besides I would be achieving goal number one.

Guess What?

People were interested! People I didn’t know! I told myself I wouldn’t care if no one took notice, but I won’t lie I’m pretty excited that people did. In fact I’m down right ecstatic! I’ve learned a lot about myself since I started writing hilarystyle.me and I’m pretty proud of what’s it’s become and where it’s going. Not only that, but I’ve “met” a number of other bloggers in the process and have been inspired by so many of them! Apparently, I’ve been of some inspiration to them as well because two different lovely blogging ladies nominated me for blogging awards!

The Sunshine Award

sunshineawards

Cassy, a fashion blogger, nominated me for the Sunshine award, which is given to fellow bloggers who inspire and bring sunshine into the lives of their readers and fellow bloggers. Thank you Cassy for thinking of me, it’s such an honor to know that not only do you enjoy reading my blog, but that you think it’s cheerful and inspiring!Check out Cassy’s blog, baublesandknots.com for fun inspirational ideas about what to wear for just about any occasion! She’s always including fun jewelry and isn’t afraid to put herself out there! I LOVE THAT!There are some “rules” that come along with the honor of being nominated and I am posting them here:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Answer the questions from your nominator.
  • Nominate other bloggers that bring sunshine to your day.
  • Ask your nominees as many thoughtful questions as you so desire.
  • If you so desire click on a few of the blots see what they’re all about.

Cassy’s questions to me:

  • Is there a favorite book/movie/band/artist that influences your personal style?

I am not one to limit myself and have a wide variety of tastes in all of the above. I think this is clearly reflected in my style!

  • Do you think it is important to unplug & how do you balance this while participating in a digital world?

I do my best to unplug, but must admit I’m not always successful.

  • What does style mean to you?

For me style means fun and for myself personally it’s a reflection of who I am inside as well.

The Liebster Award!

As I mentioned above it means a lot to know that not only are you putting your thoughts and ideas out into the world, but that your words are actually making a positive impact on someone else!

As Beth says: The main aim of the Liebster Award is to highlight new voices and pay the compliment forward to others. Kind of like a virtual chain letter combined with an online high-five.

Check out Beth’s blog VacationCoffee with fun tips about travel, travel with kids and amazing photos!

Mom Stuff! What Did I Know?

I always knew I’d be a mom someday, or at least I certainly hoped so! However, when considering parenthood there were SO MANY things I could never have imagined. That’s a good thing too, because had I known otherwise I might have made different choices. I suppose this naiveté is part of what enables our species to go on!

#momsarethebestVery quickly I learned that I had literally been clueless about what to expect prior to motherhood. Looking back I had definitely been judging others and felt so smug about how when I was the mom I would do it differently. I would do it right.

Had I listened, really listened, I might have learned a thing or two from friends with kids, like how letting your kid cry it out is much harder than it actually sounds, and that picking your battles isn’t always easy, and sometimes it’s just easier and more fun to say yes even though you shouldn’t, and most importantly that everything doesn’t always go according to plan! Sometimes you’re still laying with your seven year old every single night even though you fully intended that he was going to sleep on his own from day one!

Of course, in hindsight, I know I simply wasn’t ready to learn these things. That is until I had a child of my own then I’d joined the club!

Since that time I’ve learned so much! Here, in no particular order, are just a few things I’ve learned over the past 13 years as the mother of two boys:

  1. Never go into the bathroom barefoot.
  2. Rain or shine I drive teen carpools with the windows down. The other alternative is a gas mask. Deodorant people. Deodorant!
  3. Love the name you choose because you’re going to say it A LOT.
  4. There’s no reason for a baby to cry!
  5. You’re the boss!
  6. Wipe warmers are awesome. Did I mention there’s no reason for a baby to cry?
  7. Keep those little scented baggies in your diaper bag for dirty diaper disposal.
  8. Be prepared for vomit. Anytime. Anywhere.
  9. You will make mistakes.
  10. Your kids will get Lice. Yes, lice, and you probably will too.
  11. Don’t threaten a punishment you can’t or won’t be able to follow through on.
  12. It’s okay to change your mind.
  13. Wait as long as possible to potty train, buy cheap underwear and throw it out when accidents happen.
  14. Accidents will happen.
  15. It’s okay if your kid isn’t into sports. Really!
  16. Play dates aren’t fun.
  17. Enjoy the moments.
  18. Even the tough ones because it goes by so fast.
  19. You’ll be surprised at what you can handle.
  20. Say yes to help.
  21. Other moms have great ideas. Be open to them.
  22. Don’t brag.
  23. It’s nice to say yes.
  24. Don’t over volunteer.
  25. Go with your instinct.

Mom Stuff! Part One: Whoops!

Whoops! Earlier today I accidentally pushed “publish” on an idea for a possible future post… The title was Why So Rude?, and while I’m not sure I was ever going to finish writing it, let alone publish it, this morning’s publishing mistake is forcing my hand and I’ve decided to put it out there.

The post was part of a series of ideas I consider taboo for my blog about Travel, Fashion and Fun! They are subjects I have definite feelings about, but either I am not sure they warrant an audience or they are topics I am sure will invite trouble of some sort. For example: religion, politics and volunteering at my child’s school to name a few! Don’t laugh, that last one is a pretty hot topic where I live!

Don’t get me wrong, I consider myself very lucky! My family and I live in a fantastic community filled with great people. It’s pretty much impossible not to run into someone you know, everywhere you go, and we love that! Most days are filled with pleasant exchanges with people we know and love. Occasionally, the rare unpleasant encounter occurs and when it does I’m always so surprised.

So What Happened? Who Was Rude?

Recently my son, Elliot, started taking ice skating lessons and he really loves it! I’m so happy for him because it’s the first time he’s shown excitement about any after school program. Parents are allowed to watch the lessons, but only from outside the rink through a series of windows. There are three full classes going on at any one time. Anyway…

The lesson was starting, so I made my way to where I would be able to see Elliot’s class. When I arrived, there were only three other people watching and there are four full-length windows. Perfect! There’s room for at least one more…

I stepped up to the window, whoops! Apparently there wasn’t room for one more. As soon as I placed myself in front of the window the woman next to me stiffened and gave me a pretty hard stare. Had I done something wrong? “Excuse me, is something the matter?” I asked. “You’re too close!” she said. “Oh! I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, I was hoping to watch my little boy” was my response. “But you’re still standing here.” She said with an evil pointed look. For just one moment I was speechless. Was this really happening? Had anything really happened to warrant this attitude toward another parent? I was sure I’d put on deodorant that morning and looked and smelled presentable. WTF?! I’m friendly, right?!  These were the things going through my head, just before I decided I wasn’t having it!

You know those times when someone treats you badly and you aren’t sure what to do, but then later you know just what you would have said? Well, this wasn’t one of those times. I knew just what to say! I looked her right in the face and I said, “You’re a real asshole!”

I felt, hurt, exhilarated, angry, and strangely giddy. I wasn’t able to watch the lesson, but I had stood up for myself. Even if it was a bit childish… I sat down on a nearby bench, logged in to WordPress, and created a new draft… Why So Rude? Isn’t there enough room at the windows for everyone…

Confession: I Couldn’t Care Less About Football!

I’ve never really enjoyed watching sporting events, of any kind. I admit it. I’m that person, you know, the one chatting away, who hardly has a clue which teams are playing. Often, I’m wondering, why is everyone screaming, or is that cheering, at the television? What just happened? Oh well, what was I saying…

#gohawksI hail from Seattle, and with the success of the Seattle Seahawks and their recent back to back appearances in the Super Bowl I’ve tried to pay more attention, but the truth is my favorite parts of the Super Bowl are the commercials and the excuse to eat as much 7 Layer Dip as I can! Last year’s commercials were downright depressing, so I guess it’s just me and the 7 Layer Dip… The Half Time Show isn’t bad either. 😉

As you’re probably aware the Seahawks won’t be playing in the Super Bowl this year, but my happily ignoring all the pregame media, and showing up just in time for the dip, is proving difficult since the game is taking place about 20 minutes from my house. That’s right, Super Bowl 50 is taking place in the Bay Area, and more than one million football loving people are expected! YEAH!

Football Alternatives

My question is? Since Levi’s Stadium holds approximately 68,500 people, what are the other 932,000 people going to do before, during and after they finish off their 7 Layer Dip? Eating, drinking and shopping comes to mind… Here are just a few of my favorite places:

(Whoever you are)

I. Am. A. Runner.

#racebibs

#runningmedalsEarlier this month I completed my 500th class at the studio where I workout! I’m pretty proud of myself! Here’s the thing, 5 years ago, this month, when I started working out, I wasn’t really sure how long it would last. Let’s be honest, I wasn’t sure I would make it a week. However, I had recently returned from a trip to New Orleans, and from the way my jeans were feeling, I might have eaten one too many beignets. Rather than complain about it, I was taking action!

I would be a runner.

I borrowed an old pair of Nikes, buckled Elliot into his buggy and away we went!

Okay, It Wasn’t Quite That Easy…

#inspirationNot really grasping what it meant to “go for a run,” I threw on some old sweats, an oversized t-shirt and those borrowed Nikes and headed to the park… 3 MILES from our house! WHAT WAS I THINKING? Now I had to get home, and to say I was out of shape would be an understatement. I stopped multiple times and had to walk/limp the last two miles home. A full week went by before I could use the bathroom without holding onto the wall for support. This was going to be much harder than I thought…

The Proverbial Carrot at the End of the Stick

I didn’t want to quit, but this running thing was hard. I needed something to help keep me on track… I needed… a new running outfit! So I set a goal for myself:

Goal: Run twice a week for one month.

Reward: New running outfit from Lululemon

This might not have been the right goal for everyone, but it worked perfectly for me, and of course once I got the new outfit I had no choice, but to get my money’s worth out of it… Not only that, but within 6 weeks my jeans weren’t snug anymore and I felt noticeably happier and healthier!

#seejanerunhalfmarathonShortly after I achieved my goal, I decided to sign up for my first race, a Half Marathon!  Not only did I complete that race, but I immediately signed up for another one…

But That’s Not All…

#uforiastudiosI was now open to a whole new world, the world of fitness, and when a friend asked me to join her for an indoor cycling class… I thought why not? Guess What? 5 years and 500 classes later we are still spinning together!

#myrunninggirlsI’m still running with the same group of fabulous ladies I started with! I wish I could tell you more, but we have a saying, What’s said on the run, stays on the run…

Anyway…The Rest is History

Since the beginning I’ve run thousands of miles, taken literally hundreds of fitness classes and set many goals, which I then crushed. I even became a certified running coach!

In case you’re thinking, but I’m not a runner, I’m not fast enough, I can’t keep up… Remember, I never thought I would make it past one week!

Here are a few tips that have helped me along the way:

  • Run Happy. Whatever it takes! Give yourself permission to do what is best for you.
  • Fight the mental battle. Are you really hurt? Is it really that hard? Are you just tired? You can do this!
  • Bring a friend or 7. That’s right, while it was me who dragged myself out of bed to train on those cold dark winter mornings and it was also me who went to those cycling classes every week for 5 years another very large part of it was the motivation I got from knowing my friends would be there sweating with me!
  • Listen to Your body. One of the hardest things for an athlete to do is take a break, but If something doesn’t feel right don’t keep going. Remember if you take good care of yourself you’ll have a lot of miles ahead of you.
  • Don’t quit on yourself. You. Are. A. Runner. It’s not about how fast or how far, it’s about getting it done and doing something for you!
  • Make a playlist. For those days when your crew can’t make it, bring along some tunes to help pass the miles.
  • Look good. Start every workout with fresh stylish gear! Nobody’s motivated when they don’t feel like they look good.

See you on the road…

The Soundtrack Of My Life! Volumes 1 & 2…

SAMSUNG CSC

Have you ever walked into a room to do something, but then can’t remember what that something was. Happens to me all the time! However, when thinking about moments over the course of my life I have no trouble remembering the exact song that was playing at a given moment and who I was with when I heard it! I’ve started thinking of these songs as the “soundtrack of my life” and as far as soundtracks go, I’m pretty happy with it…

So, I’m Making You A Tape!

SAMSUNG CSC

Okay, I’m not making you a tape…There are many upsides to the digital music world, but sharing songs isn’t one of them and that’s too bad. The days of making someone a mixed tape are over. Was there a better way to “tell” someone how you were feeling?! Good or bad, giving someone a mixed tape allowed you to bare your soul without ever having to say anything at all.

Before I share my virtual mixed tape with you, let’s go over a few things…

What these songs are:

A representation of the people, places and moments that have made up my life. Including, early childhood, teenage angst, love found and lost, friendship, good times, bad times, spiky hair and padlock necklaces, my first concert, my first CD, independence, lullabies, wedding dances, my son’s first concert.

What these songs are not:

This list is not serious; it’s meant to be fun! This list is by no means comprehensive. It’s not a list of my favorite songs, and although some would probably make that list, there are a few on the list that I don’t even like. This isn’t a list of hits, obviously, though there are a few on here.

So here it is…

The Soundtrack Of My Life – Volume 1

  1. Space Oddity – David Bowie
  2. Cars – Gary Numan
  3. Major Tom – Peter Shilling
  4. The Warrior – Patty Smyth

  11. Holidays In The Sun – Sex Pistols
  12. Changes – David Bowie
  13. Time – Pink Floyd
  14. Forever Young – Alphaville
  15. Take On Me – a-ha
  16. Second Hand News – Fleetwood Mac

  18. My Way – Sid Vicious version
  19. A New England – Billy Bragg
