Exploring Bryce Canyon National Park Day & Night

Bryce Canyon National Park with kids #BryceCanyon

Bryce Canyon with Kids #sunsetpoint #BryceCanyonBryce Canyon National Park, was just one of many National and State parks we spent time in during our visit to Utah. In fact we visited four National Parks, one State Park, and a Tribal Park. If the number of photos I took are any indication, Bryce Canyon was a favorite!

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah #sunrisepoint

That could be due to its higher elevations and cooler temperatures, which made Bryce Canyon a welcome respite from the extreme heat of our previous stops in Zion and Las Vegas.

Bryce Canyon National Park #hoodoo

We enjoyed hiking through unique and alien landscapes by day, and explored the night sky, and it’s many wonders, under it’s famously dark skies by night.

Getting There

Bryce Canyon National Park #roadtriputah

At around 80 miles the scenic drive from Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon is a very manageable distance, however the road can at times be curvy, steep and narrow or all three at once, and if you’re me, that can make for slow going.

Bryce Canyon National Park #utahroadtrip

Other times, the road seems to stretch out in front of you for what feels like forever, and it was during one of those stretches that I saw something in the distance. What is that large and strange looking formation?

The Rock Stop!

The Rock Shop Orderville Utah #therockstop

Having previously read about The Rock Stop, we decided to stop and take a look around! As it turns out we were far from the only ones! People come from around the world to visit the Wonders of Utah, and it turns out The Rock Stop is one of them.

Oderer Utah The Rock Stop Utah

This turned out to be a perfect place to stretch our legs and grab a drink and a snack. We even picked up a souvenir or two!

Bryce Canyon National Park By Day

If, like us, you have limited time in the Park, consider making the visitor center your first stop. While there, you can learn about the park, pick up a park map, and speak with the Park Rangers about what might be the best experience for your group’s needs.

Mossy Cave Trail – Easy

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah

The Mossy Cave trail includes close up views of the Park’s famous hoodoos, the mossy cave, and a waterfall. At just under one mile roundtrip Mossy Cave Trail is a perfect hike for all ages and fitness levels. This hike includes parking and services.

The Navajo Loop/Queen’s Garden Combination Trail – Moderate

Bryce Canyon National Park #thorshammer
You’ll see “Thor’s Hammer” on the Navajo Loop Trail

One of the Park’s most popular hikes, The Navajo Loop/Queen’s Garden Combination Trail, is a perfect hike if you want to get a taste of what Bryce Canyon has to offer, but don’t have a lot of time in the Park.

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah

The hike is a loop and starts at Sunset point. For safety the NPS park service recommends walking .4 miles along the canyon’s rim to Sunrise point where you follow the Queens Garden Trail down into the canyon. Whoops we did just the opposite.

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah
Whoops, we went the hard way!

The hike took us around three hours, contains 300+ feet of elevation and includes some very steep drop offs. The views from above the canyon were stunning, but I also loved walking among the Park’s famous hoodoos. You can see more photos from this amazing hike at the end of the post!

We took our time and along the way enjoyed some light rain, the unique landscape, and the many chipmunks!

Dark Ranger Telescope Tours #astrophotography

Dark Rangers Telescope Tour

Dark Ranger Telescope Tours #astrophotographyIf Bryce Canyon was one of my favorite places, then The Dark Rangers Telescope Tour was my favorite activity of the entire trip! It’s been a dream of mine to photograph the night sky, specifically the Milky Way, and Bryce Canyon’s remote location makes it the perfect place to fulfill this dream. My sons both love science making this a wonderful family activity!

I discovered Dark Rangers Telescope Tours while researching the Park’s official site, and I can’t say enough about our experience. Our evening with Kevin Poe, a local park ranger, and astronomer, was perfect from start to finish.

Dark Ranger Telescope Tours #astrophotography

We met Kevin at his observatory, and spent three hours learning about and exploring the night sky. We saw Saturn and Jupiter, a swan nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, Vega, star clusters, exploded stars and more. It was truly amazing!

Not only that, but I got a lesson in astrophotography, and night vision! Did you know that red is the only color light that allows your vision to stay in night mode?

Tips & Advice:

Bryce Canyon National Park #steeptrails

  • Are you traveling with a Senior Citizen or a 4th Grader? That’s good news! Seniors can purchase a lifetime National Park Pass for $80 with access to over 2000 locations, and their companions will be able to enter along with them for free.
  • Fourth grade students and their families can enter National parks for free with the Every Kid in A Park Pass. Sign up on line, print out the temporary pass, and redeem it for your permanent card when you visit your first park!

Bryce Canyon National Park #everykidinapark

  • Bryce Canyon City is located just outside the park. Food, lodging and free parking can be found here.

  • Cars are allowed in Bryce Canyon National Park, but I highly recommend taking advantage of the free parking in Bryce Canyon City and using the park shuttle.
  • The Visitor Center is the first stop inside the park.

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah #visitorcenter

  • Watch your step and look where you’re going. There are many drop offs and very few protective measures in place, we saw a little baby slip and he almost fell. Really! The daddy caught him at the last second when I gasped!

Bryce Canyon National Park #warning

  • If you’re interested in astrophotography book your tour with the Dark Rangers in advance and you may be able to connect your camera directly to the telescopes.
  • There are a variety of tours available, however I wanted to include astrophotography, so chose a private tour.

Titanic Belfast!

Northern Ireland BelfastWe’ve all heard of Titanic, the unsinkable ship that sadly sank on her maiden voyage. Her tragic story and the stories of her ill fated passengers have held our fascination for over 100 years, but did you know that Titanic was built in Belfast, home to the famous shipbuilders Harland and Wolff? Titanic Belfast, a museum dedicated to all things Titanic, is appropriately located in the very spot Titanic was built and launched. The moment I knew we would be in Belfast I knew this place would be on my list and we weren’t disappointed! If you find yourself in the vicinity or anywhere near it I highly recommend a stop!

The boys and I decided to walk to the museum from our hotel, which took about 30 minutes. Along the way we stopped to take photos by the river, saw a parade and walked by The Albert Memorial Clock.

Northern Ireland Belfast

Titanic Belfast is quite a large museum, so allow at least two hours for your visit, though we spent about four! If you’re traveling with younger children ask for the scavenger hunt when purchasing your entrance tickets. My little Elliot really enjoyed looking out for the clues and at the end he received a prize!

Belfast Northern Ireland

The museum exhibits are laid out along an easy to follow path which moves along from floor to floor. You’ll start by learning about Belfast’s linen and ship building industries and as you move forward you’ll learn about how the ship was built and launched, the loading of the passengers, the voyage itself and of course the sinking. There are also exhibits touching upon the aftermath, her discovery on the ocean floor and her history in film, books and television.

Belfast Northern Ireland

The many interactive exhibits, first hand accounts, and films are all really well done and kept us occupied for hours. The White Star Line dishes and other interesting artifacts on display throughout the museum really helped to bring the past to life. I took only a few photos during our visit and instead spent most of my time just enjoying the museum. We did see a wedding taking place which was fun. Interesting choice of venue!

Northern Ireland Belfast

Although it looked inviting the ground floor cafe wasn’t great, though the service was friendly enough. Of course no visit to a museum would be complete without a visit to the gift shop where we bought some holiday ornaments and a magnet.

The Nomadic – The Last White Star Vessel

Belfast Northern IrelandAlong with our admission to the museum our tickets also granted us access to the SS Nomadic, the Titanic’s tender and the last White Star Line vessel in existence. The Nomadic has a long history of her own, but her initial purpose as a tender was to ferry Titanic’s passengers back and forth from port. The Nomadic’s interior was intentionally styled to match Titanic. This would give the passengers a taste of what was to come on the larger vessel and ensure a seamless experience. I particularly enjoyed getting a feel for what it must really have been like aboard Titanic!

We spent a good amount of time exploring the ship and the many interactive displays on board. The boys enjoyed walking around on deck and of course posed for my many photos!

Game of Thrones Bonus!

Belfast Northern IrelandA huge Game of Thrones fan I was excited to see that Titanic Studios, where some of GoT is filmed is located just behind the museum! Maybe next time I’ll work out how to get in there for a look around…

Accommodations & Such…

We stayed at The Ten Square hotel located in Donegal Square directly across the street from Belfast’s City Hall. The rooms, service and overall experience were great! We enjoyed the hotel breakfast each morning and the staff were incredibly friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

However, I will mention that although the shower and bathroom were lovely the shampoo and conditioner were all in one which isn’t a favorite of mine. The hairdryer was powerful, but the power button had to be held down continuously, which can become tiresome after a while. The only plug was in the main room, which is never a positive for me.

My hilarystyle rating for The Ten Square Hotel is: hairdryerhairdryerhairdryerhairdryer

I have to mention that we loved our food at  Nu Dehli a fabulous Indian Restaurant walking distance from the Ten Square. The Chicken Korma was fantastic!

Keep Calm & Disneyland!

Disneyland Big Thunder MountainI spent an incredibly relaxing day at Disneyland the other day! Yes, you heard me… incredibly relaxing… at Disneyland. Yes, there were crowds, lines and heat, after all it is summer and I was in Disneyland. However, having visited more times than I can count with every combination of people imaginable I feel like I’ve  got a pretty good handle on keeping calm and Disneyland at the same time and you can too!

DisneylandI know some of you might be thinking, how is this even possible? Yes, Disneyland is crowded, expensive and touristy, but it’s also magical, beautiful and fun!

DisneylandIt’s all in the mindset… understanding that it’s just not possible to do it all, especially if you only have one day, and that trying would only serve to ruin the day and everyone’s good time… basically the same philosophy I use when traveling to far away places when time is an issue. Time is always an issue. There is never enough time in disneyland! However, it’s still very possible to see many of the attractions and feel like you’ve gotten your money’s worth while at the same time keeping calm and enjoying yourself!

Here are some handy tips:

  1. The FastPass system is incredibly useful, but remember to pay close attention to FastPass return times. You’ll be turned away if you arrive after your ride window has closed. Keep in mind that the more popular rides can run out of FastPasses for the day.
    Disneyland
  2. Did you know that if you’re a family with a younger child you can take turns riding without having to wait in the line all over again? Just ask for a Rider Switch Pass at the beginning of the line! The Rider Switch option is available on attractions that have a minimum height requirement. For example: California Screamin’!
    #californiascreamin
  3. Try to visit the busiest attractions while others are viewing the parades or fireworks show.
    Disneyland
  4. To avoid the lunch and dinner crowds consider eating your meals a bit on the early or late side, or better yet skip the traditional sit down meal and grab a hearty snack to go!
    #chiliconequeso
  5. Did you know you can purchase Dole Whip in the Tiki Room waiting area? Yep, They serve the popular treat from both sides of the hut!  Yes, even if you aren’t attending the show.
    Disneyland
  6. Radiator Springs Racers runs out of FastPasses very early in the day and the lines are always incredibly long, but if you don’t mind riding alone, try the Single Rider line, your party can wait in line together until the very last moment. The best part is that the Single Rider Line can be as short as 15 minutes while the Stand By Line is as long as 120 minutes! This also works great for California Screamin’, the Matterhorn and Splash Mountain! However, you need to be at least 8yo to ride alone.
    #radiatorspringsracers
  7. Wear comfortable clothing no matter what!! Your comfort is more important than style! Even if the days are warm the nights can be chilly here in SoCal, so bring something with sleeves.
    Disneyland
  8. When waiting for It’s A Small World stay in the line to the right, its always faster. I know it looks longer, but trust me!
    Disneyland
  9. There are many walk up food options, but if you’re interested in dining at the Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, Ariel’s Grotto or any of the Fine/Character dining locations reservations should be made well in advance. Everyone should try Character Dining at least once!
    Disneyland
  10. Have you heard of Hidden Mickeys? There are many hidden surprises all over the parks. We even found hidden images in the table at the  Carthay Circle restaurant! There are also many other Easter eggs around the park so keep your eye out!
    Disneyland
  11. No one is too young or old for Disneyland and if they’re under 3 it won’t cost extra to bring them along, however you’ll have the memory of their first experience!
    Disneyland
  12. No one does fireworks quite like Disneyland, so if you’ve never seen them it’s worth the wait, and for the best viewing (in front of the castle is best) there will be a wait! Plan to claim your spot about 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to show time and then take turns holding down the fort and waiting for the magic to begin. Trust me, it’s worth it!
    Disneyland
  13. Did you know there is a wonderful baby care center located at the far end of Main Street just on the other side of Main Street Photo! Complete with high chairs, all the baby supplies you can think up including food and diapers and adorable tiny little toilets for the potty training set. It’s the perfect place to drop in and take care of all your baby business! So there are no excuses!
    Disneyland
  14. Ever wonder what its like inside Sleeping Beauty’s Castle? Guess what, you can go inside! Just to the left after you walk through the portcullis there is a doorway, walk up the stairs and follow the corridor. You can watch the story unfold in the action view windows located along the castle’s passages. You’ll come out on the opposite side about 5 minutes later!
    Disneyland
  15. Visit lands and try rides both in the day and again after dark! You’ll be surprised at how different they feel. My two favorite after dark ride experiences are Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Mad Hatter Teacups and don’t miss Radiator Springs after dark it’s amazing!

  16. Try stuff on! Hats, slippers, costumes, you name it… Disneyland shops have it all! If you can’t try on or wear a silly hat at Disneyland, where can you? Better yet, bring a friend and try stuff on together!
    Disneyland
  17. Stop and smell the flowers! Beyond everything else it has to offer Disneyland grounds are not only impeccable, but there are beautiful gardens and flowers everywhere you look!
    Disneyland
  18. Use the photo pass system and have your photo taken on the rides, with characters, or in front of Disneyland’s many famous landmarks! Our family has an album filled with photos from all our previous visits and it’s amazing how much we’ve all changed over the years!
    Disneyland
  19. Remember don’t expect to do everything, but do expect to: Keep Calm & Disneyland!
    Disneyland

If you’ve been to Disneyland before you already have your favorites, but just incase you haven’t or are looking for some new experiences, Simon, Elliot and I have put together a partial list of our “can’t miss” attractions, treats and shops!

  1. Disneyland popcorn
    Disneyland
  2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (especially at night)

Running with RunDisney

Disneyland is high on my list of favorite places, so when I heard they had started a run series I was pretty excited! The idea of running in and around the Disney Parks as well as behind the scenes seemed awesome, and it absolutely was! Let’s face it, is anyone better at organizing large groups of people than Disney?

From the Expo to the Finish line and everything in between there are so many positives to participating in a RunDisney event! Not only does the course take you through both Disneyland and California Adventure, but the on course entertainment is fun and constant which really helps the miles fly by! A pair of fairy wings doesn’t hurt either!

#thefinishlineThere are multiple RunDisney weekends throughout the year each with a different theme. I had the opportunity to participate in both the Tinkerbell 1/2 Marathon, which I ran twice, and the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon.

A Sprinkling Of Pixie Dust

You know me, I love a good theme and Disney races are the perfect opportunity to have some fun with your race attire! If you don’t know what to bring, don’t worry, The Expo will have everything you could ever want or dream up. This includes outfits, hats, shoes, accessories galore and even hairdos!

I don’t usually like a lot of extras when I’m running, but I couldn’t resist picking up a few things. I decided arm warmers; a themed skirt and a hairdo would be fun! If you’re wondering, the hairdo absolutely held up, in fact I have a feeling it might never have come out! It must have been the Pixie Dust they sprinkled on as the finishing touch!

Ready, Set, Go…

All of the events take place when the park is closed to the general public, which means you’ll need to be at the start line before dawn. I’m not a big fan of pre-dawn wake up calls, so I stayed at the official park hotels, which made getting to the Start Line really easy and more importantly, gave me a little more time to sleep.

There were literally thousands of people participating, but everything was so organized and run so smoothly you would never have known. Once in our assigned corals there was entertainment and finally just before we set off, fireworks!

Along the Way

You’ll hardly have time to think about how far 13.1 is because you’ll be so busy checking out all the on course entertainment. As you run along the course you’ll see ethnic dancers from around the world, cheerleaders, marching bands, and vintage cars from every decade! Disney characters and park employee’s cheer as you run by King Arthur’s Carousel, It’s A Small World, and many other iconic Disneyland attractions, and if you’re interested in stopping there are photo opportunities as well. During the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon I had the amazing experience of running right through the Anaheim Angeles Stadium and I must admit it was a highlight!

The Finish!

Mickey and friends will be cheering for you as you cross the finish line and of course there will be that well deserved medal! I loved the idea of running a race at Disneyland and I’m happy to say that it lived up to all my expectations! Not only did I have a wonderful time during the run, but I was able to include family and friends and make an entire weekend out of it! Three times!

Think of a wonderful thought
Any merry little thought
Think of Christmas, think of snow
Think of sleigh bells off you go
Like reindeer in the sky

You can fly
You can fly
You can fly

Think of the happiest things
It’s the same as having wings
Take the path that moonbeams make
If the moon is still awake
You’ll see him wink his eye

You can fly
You can fly
You can fly

Up you go with a height and ho
To the stars beyond the blue
There’s a Never Land waiting for you
Where all your happy dreams come true
Every dream that you dream will come true

When there’s a smile in your heart
There’s no better time to start
Think of all the joy you’ll find
When you leave the world behind
And bid your cares goodbye

You can fly
You can fly
You can fly
You can fly
You can fly

When there’s a smile in your heart
There’s no better time to start
Think of all the joy you’ll find
When you leave the world behind
And bid your cares goodbye

You can fly
You can fly
You can fly
You can fly
You can fly

Lisbon! Visiting the Oceanário de Lisboa

#oceanariodelisboaThe question I’m asked most frequently when people find out that we are planning our next adventure is, “Are you bringing the kids?” The answer is always YES!

The next questions usually revolve around whether or not the kids enjoy travel and what we do to keep them occupied. Not that they weren’t always “go along” guys, but it’s definitely getting easier as they get older and while they are interested in seeing what each new city has to offer, it helps to allow time for some of the more family friendly attractions.

Vasco the Explorer

Most recently after a long hot day exploring fabulous Lisbon we decided that asking the kids to step inside one more church or monument might not be fair, so we decided to surprise them with a trip to the Oceanario de Lisboa, or the Lisbon aquarium. For the most part the monuments in Belem were already closing or would be soon and there was still time to make the Oceanarium.

The aquarium is located in the Parque das Nacoes, a newer more modern part of the city which was built up for the 1998 World Expo. It’s one the largest aquariums in the world and the largest one in Europe. Along with the usual favorites, like sea otters, penguins, sharks, rays and seahorses they also have an Ocean Sunfish which we were pretty excited to see!

#oceansunfish

In the end what started out as a break for the kids turned out to be a really lovely experience for all of us!
