Faraway Files #91

Faraway Files A Travel Blog Community #farawayfiles

I’m hosting Faraway Files this week, and after all your fabulous posts from last week’s edition I’m excited to find out where you’ll be taking me next! From hiking adventures in Norway and New Zealand, castles in Portugal and graffiti in Venice Beach there was a little bit of everything and I’ve definitely added to my ever growing travel wish list.

My kids went back to school weeks ago, but autumn isn’t here just yet and I’m holding on tight to the last days of summer. With this in mind I’m sharing our visit to Laguna Beach just an hour “or so” from Los Angeles and the perfect place for that one last summer hurrah!

Faraway Files A Travel Blog Community #90 Crater Lake Oregon

It’s Faraway Files time! I’ve missed all of you and I am looking forward to reading about your summer adventures and to share some of mine with you. I’m always excited when I travel, but I admit that the times when all four of us are equally excited doesn’t happen as often. This week I’ll be sharing the surprise and delight of our visit to Crater Lake National Park in Southern Oregon. Funny enough, what turned out to be the grand finale of our two week vacation was chosen simply because it happened to be on the way home.

As soon as the lake came into view our mouths quite literally dropped open and we collectively went WHOOOA! This was the bluest water we’d ever seen!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Faraway Files. We’re just back from an epic summer road trip, our third annual, and I’m deep into sorting both laundry and photos. As you can probably imagine I’ve got loads of both! We had a wonderful time exploring the West Coast from LA to Portland, and I’m eager to share all the details with you in the coming weeks.

Much to our delight, our teen enjoyed the trip as much as the rest of us, and let’s face it, whether at home or on vacation it can be difficult to find family friendly activities that appeal to all ages. This week I’ll be sharing my ideas for all ages family fun activities in Los Angeles.

Faraway Files #81

Faraway Files A Travel Blogging Community

Summer break has finally arrived, and here in Southern California tourist season is in full swing. Did you know that according to the LA Tourism and Convention board 48.3 million tourists visited LA in 2017?! That’s a lot of visitors, and all of them are eating, but where?

Eating is one of travels greatest joys, but it can also be one of the most frustrating. How do you avoid the more touristy establishments and pinpoint the best places. You’re in luck if you plan on visiting Los Angeles because I’ve got you covered, and I’ll be sharing some of my favorite LA eating establishments with you on this week’s edition of Faraway Files.

Katy and Erin hosted last week, and Katy’s favorites were:

A Travel Blogging Community Faraway Files #78 Palm Springs

Though I dream of faraway travel almost daily, and at the very least every Thursday (reading all the lovely posts on Faraway Files), a quick getaway to somewhere close to home is often the more realistic option. This was the case last March when we spent the boy’s Spring Vacation in Palm Springs, which although only a two hour drive from Los Angeles, feels a world away.

Date Palms Palm Springs California
Date Trees in Coachella Valley

The extreme desert climate, landscape and architecture are all so different from what we experience on the Southern California coast. We spent three days exploring the area and this week’s post highlights some of the area’s family friendly activities. Spring is the perfect time to visit this desert city in the heart of the Coachella Valley as the temperatures are still very manageable.

Do you have a favorite getaway destination? Maybe your easy getaway is someone else’s far off dream destination? We’d love to read about it on this week’s Faraway Files!

Last week’s edition was hosted by Clare and Erin. Clare is hosting again this week! Read all about her favorites over on her post. Erin’s favorites were:

My daydreams are filled with amazing destinations from around the world, and if given the opportunity I’d drop everything and head off to any one of them. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula in Japan, the canals of Venice, Italy, or the fjords of Norway all sound fabulous, but for various reasons too numerous to list here they’ll all be staying tucked away in my dreams. For the moment…

So, How will I satisfy my wanderlust when I’m not traveling? Well, lucky for me Los Angeles is filled with wonderful places to explore some of which feel very much like traveling to another country. Koreatown, one of LA’s hottest neighborhoods is one such place. You’ll find authentic shopping, dinning and entertainment, and after a day spent here I promise you will feel transported! You can read all about my recent adventures in Koreatown in this week’s Faraway Files link up!

Faraway Files #74

Summer break is just around the corner and I’m still undecided as to where our family will travel. There are so many wonderful destinations, I’m having a hard time choosing. Maybe Italy for the coffee and art, or Spain for tapas and siestas, or maybe we’ll just stay home and be tourists in our own city? We’ve come nowhere near discovering all that Los Angeles has to offer.

The Hollywood Sign Los Angeles California

This week I’ll be sharing a post about some of the most touristy places iconic film locations in LA. My boys and I get so excited when we see these places in the movies or on television. Calling out, “We’ve been there!” As you can imagine this happens a lot when you live in Los Angeles. Over the years there have been countless references to many of LA’s landmarks in songs, movies, television and video games making them famous the world over. In fact, even if you’ve never been here before you’re probably already familiar with many of them.

What are your summer plans? Have you decided or are you still up in the air? Will you visit somewhere new, or a repeat destination? Maybe you’re coming to LA? If so, let me know, I’ll show you around!

Spring is officially here, or at least the calendar says so, and the flowers here in LA think so too. Everything is blooming like mad, and the air outside smells heavenly like a florist shop, so it’s hard to believe we’re expecting the “storm of the season.”  Angelenos are famous for overreacting where weather is concerned, but this time it might just be a big deal.

Hello from sunny Southern California, and welcome to another edition of Faraway Files. It seems like spring should be in the air, but winter shows no signs of slowing, in fact it seems to be ramping up these past few weeks, which I’m sure has many of you dreaming of warmer places!

It may look warm here in SoCal, but I promise you I’m wearing two jackets.

Believe it or not, we’ve even experienced a bit of a cold snap here in Los Angeles, prompting us to dig deep into the recesses of our closets for our seldom used coats and sweaters. What’s a cold snap in Los Angeles, you wonder?  We’ll I suppose it’s all relative isn’t it…

Cold snap or no, I absolutely love LA, and have been embracing my continuing mission to explore as much of this city as I possibly can!

This week I’ll be sharing our rainy day adventures (yes, it occasionally rains here) inside Candytopia, a traveling exhibition filled with interactive exhibits, Insta photo ops and of course candy!

We love our link up and the supportive community we’ve created. If you join in, please reciprocate and comment on the hosts’ posts as well as any others that take your eye. If we see a pattern of people not joining in, we have decided that it’s fairest to all of us to remove the links of those posters.

So let’s inspire and share each other’s posts. We’ll try to read and comment on every post and we’ll share them on social media too. Each week we’ll choose our favourites and highlight them on our blogs and social media channels using #FarawayFiles.

How it works:

  • Link up one travel-related post and add the Faraway Files badge onto the post or your blog (code below) or link back to the hosts.
  • The link up will go live every Thursday at 8am, UK time, until midnight on Friday. It will alternate between Untold Morsels, Suitcases and Sandcastles, Fifi + Hop, HilaryStyle and Oregon Girl around the World. This week’s link up is right here.
  • Link ups work best if everyone shares so please comment on all of the marked hosts’ posts and at least one other.
  • Tweet us your posts (@suitandsand, @UntoldMorsels, @oregongirlworld @fifiandhop @hilarystyleme) using the hashtag #FarawayFiles and we’ll retweet to our followers.
  • Love Instagram? Share your favourite photos from your posts with us, tagging #FarawayFiles and we’ll add our favourites to our Faraway Files Instagram feed.
  • Check out our Faraway Files Facebook page too.
